3D-Up App: Elevating Orthopedic Performance

Empowering Orthopedic Technicians: 3D-Up! Revolutionizes Custom Aid Production with Accessible 3D Printing

Orthopedic technicians play a crucial role in creating personalized orthopedic aids, a field that traditionally relies on highly specialized manual skills. While the integration of digital technologies has steadily advanced, the full potential of additive manufacturing, commonly known as 3D printing, often remains largely untapped within their daily workflows. Many dedicated technicians encounter significant hurdles, such as a lack of time or the specialized expertise required to directly engage with CAD files and complex 3D printing processes. This often leads to the outsourcing of design tasks, resulting in slowed workflows, increased costs, and, most importantly, longer waiting times for patients who urgently need their custom-fitted solutions.

Recognizing this critical gap, Stephan Morth, Stefan Biller, and Marco Hoffmann embarked on a mission to transform the orthopedic landscape. In 2022, they co-founded the innovative start-up 3D-Up!, a pioneering venture dedicated to making 3D printing workflows universally accessible and remarkably user-friendly for orthopedic professionals. Through their intuitive app, technicians can now navigate the entire process in a streamlined, five-step sequence: precise scanning, efficient digital modeling, collaborative design refinement, seamless 3D printing, and final fitting. This comprehensive approach empowers technicians to independently create accurate, print-ready models with unprecedented speed and precision. In this exclusive interview, Marco Hoffmann, a co-founder, sheds light on how 3D-Up! is not just facilitating the adoption of 3D printing but actively empowering orthopedic technicians to optimize processes, enhance efficiency, and ultimately deliver superior, timely patient care.

3DN: Could you please briefly introduce yourself and tell us how you got into the 3D printing industry?

My name is Marco Hoffmann, and I am proud to be one of the founders of “3D-Up!” In addition to this new venture, I also serve as the CEO of Movimento Orthopädie & Rehatechnik GmbH, a leading orthopedic and rehabilitation technology company based in Kassel, Germany. Since the establishment of Movimento in 2004, our philosophy has always been rooted in a profound openness to digital innovations. We haven’t just observed technological advancements; we have actively sought to integrate them strategically and effectively into every facet of our operational processes.

This proactive embrace of digital transformation has consistently led to the redefinition of entire process chains within our organization. By automating and streamlining tasks, we aim to significantly alleviate the workload on our dedicated employees, thereby enabling them to dedicate more productive, quality time to direct interaction and care for our patients. One pivotal component of these digital innovations was the advent of 3D scanning technology, which we began using intensively around 2011. It quickly became evident to us that 3D scanning was merely the foundational step in a much larger, more complex 3D process. This early realization spurred us to consistently pursue further integration of advanced digital manufacturing techniques, laying the groundwork for our eventual deep dive into 3D printing.

3DN: Who is behind “3D-Up!” and how did you get involved?

The innovative start-up “3D-Up!” was co-founded by myself, Marco Hoffmann, alongside Stephan Morth, both of whom are managing directors of Movimento GmbH, and Stefan Biller, our talented software developer. Our collective background is diverse yet deeply synergistic. Stephan and I bring many years of extensive, hands-on expertise in the realm of traditional orthopedic technology, understanding its nuances, challenges, and the intricate craftsmanship involved. Stefan, on the other hand, provides the critical software development prowess, translating our industry insights into robust, user-friendly digital solutions.

Our shared vision for 3D-Up! stems from a deep-seated desire to vigorously advance and promote modern, digital manufacturing practices within the orthopedic sector, blending the best of traditional knowledge with cutting-edge technology. For approximately three years leading up to the founding of 3D-Up!, we had been intensely focused on pushing boundaries in areas such as comprehensive automation processes, the seamless integration of custom-fit prosthetic and orthotic components, and fostering collaborative partnerships across the industry. During this period of ambitious digital transformation, a clear realization emerged: despite our significant progress, we consistently encountered a critical missing piece – an intuitive, powerful tool specifically designed to support orthopedic technicians through the crucial design and modeling process steps. This identified need became the catalyst for creating 3D-Up!.

3DN: How did the idea for “3D-Up!” come about and what are your goals?

The core goal behind “3D-Up!” was exceptionally clear from the outset: to develop a software solution that is genuinely intuitive to use, dramatically reduces the time spent on design, impeccably implements precise patient-specific parameters, and simultaneously empowers experienced orthopedic technicians to make detailed adjustments according to their unique insights and the specific needs of each patient. We envisioned a comprehensive software that could seamlessly accompany the entire additive manufacturing process, from the initial acquisition of patient data through advanced 3D scanning, all the way to generating the final, optimized print file ready for a 3D printer.

This ideal tool was precisely what we were searching for, yet it simply didn’t exist in the market. Many existing solutions either demanded proven, often extensive CAD expertise, necessitating specialized training and a steep learning curve, or required the cumbersome use of multiple disparate programs to complete a single task. This fragmentation and complexity invariably translated into significant inefficiencies, often requiring companies to hire additional specialist staff solely to manage the digital design and manufacturing aspects. Such requirements added considerable overhead and training burdens, effectively creating barriers to entry for many orthopedic businesses wanting to embrace 3D printing.

It was this pervasive unmet need that compelled us to embark on creating our own solution from the ground up. We meticulously defined what “our” software needed to achieve: who should be able to use it, what functionalities were absolutely essential, and critically, how it could be made universally accessible and usable from virtually anywhere. By considering all these factors – from the initial concept to the ultimate user experience – the logical progression from merely using the software within our own company to offering it as a transformative tool for the broader orthopedic industry became not just evident, but imperative.

3DN: Who is “3D-Up!” aimed at and how is the app used?

With “3D-Up!”, we have deliberately created a versatile tool designed to benefit the entire orthopedic technology industry, irrespective of company size or existing digital infrastructure. This means our app is equally valuable for small orthopedic technology companies that are eager to harness the immense advantages of additive manufacturing but might lack access to powerful, expensive computing units or their own in-house 3D printers. For them, 3D-Up! offers an accessible gateway to advanced manufacturing without a prohibitive initial investment.

Conversely, it also caters to established market leaders who require a highly customized and robust tool. These larger entities benefit from an application built upon our deep, real-world experience in orthopedic technology, ensuring precision and functionality down to the smallest detail, tailored to integrate seamlessly with their sophisticated operations. The app itself is engineered for maximum intuition and ease of use: users simply log in online through any web browser, upload their patient data (typically from a 3D scan), and can immediately begin the design process. For design, technicians have the flexibility to either leverage the app’s intelligent suggestions and pre-defined templates or actively engage in modifying and refining the 3D model themselves. This empowers every technician to take full control of the design, ensuring the final custom orthopedic aid perfectly matches the patient’s unique anatomical and functional requirements, thereby democratizing sophisticated 3D design and manufacturing.

3DN: Do you have any final words for our readers?

Indeed, I do. A particularly significant highlight and a core strength of our 3D-Up! app is unequivocally its seamless implementation of custom-fit parts. Additive manufacturing inherently offers a multitude of powerful advantages for the entire process chain in orthopedic technology, from initial assessment to final product delivery. However, the true value lies not just in the technology itself, but in how it is integrated and utilized to optimize patient outcomes. We are deeply committed to providing comprehensive advice and support to ensure that these theoretical benefits translate into tangible, real-world efficiencies and improvements for every user.

Our team is readily available to assist orthopedic businesses in optimizing their entire process chain. The profound time savings achieved through the adoption of additive manufacturing via 3D-Up! are not merely an operational perk; they represent a crucial opportunity. This freed-up time can then be reinvested directly into enhanced patient care – allowing technicians more time for consultations, detailed fittings, and personalized follow-ups.
