Why 3D Printing? Unlocking the Benefits of Additive Manufacturing

MIMETE’s strategic decision to enter the 3D printing market, specifically specializing in the production of metal powders, was primarily driven by two compelling factors: evolving market demands and the intrinsic advantages offered by utilizing metal powder for the fabrication of complex components. We observed a growing interest among several key customers within the FOMAS Group who were increasingly exploring the capabilities of this groundbreaking technology. This presented a clear opportunity for us to diversify and significantly expand our product offerings, providing enhanced value to our existing client base and attracting new partnerships. Additive manufacturing, or 3D printing, delivers substantial benefits and significant added value across a wide array of markets and industries. Products manufactured through 3D printing possess advantageous features that are particularly beneficial for specific sectors, including lightweight designs crucial for aerospace and automotive industries, the ability to create unparalleled complexity in geometric structures that are impossible with traditional methods, and effortless customization of products to meet precise, application-specific requirements. These capabilities allow for the creation of optimized parts, reduced material waste, and accelerated product development cycles, making additive manufacturing an indispensable tool for modern industrial innovation.

The Crafting of MIMETE Powders: A Journey from Raw Material to Precision Product

The meticulous production process of our atomized metal powders at MIMETE commences with an exhaustive analysis of each customer’s unique requirements. This initial, critical phase involves a detailed exchange of information to ascertain whether an existing in-stock powder solution will suffice or if a bespoke product, precisely tailored to the customer’s exacting needs, is necessary. Following this assessment, the raw material is carefully selected from trusted sources and subjected to rigorous incoming quality controls to ensure it meets our stringent standards. The prepared raw material then undergoes atomization using our state-of-the-art Vacuum Inert Gas Atomizer (VIGA). This advanced system is capable of processing materials in both Argon and Nitrogen inert environments, which is crucial for preventing oxidation and ensuring the purity of the final powder. The VIGA technology is fundamental in obtaining highly spherical, high-quality powder particles, which are essential for optimal flowability and consistent performance in additive manufacturing processes.

A distinctive aspect of MIMETE’s production philosophy is our commitment to sustainability: we are able to utilize both “virgin” raw materials and “recovered” material. The “recovered” material consists of surplus powder generated from our internal processing operations. Rather than being discarded as waste, this material is meticulously collected, reprocessed, and reintroduced into the production cycle, effectively becoming a new raw material. This innovative approach is driven by the increasingly urgent global imperative to adopt sustainable manufacturing practices, recognizing that circularity and the consequent minimization of waste are not merely buzzwords, but rather critically important issues in contemporary industry. After atomization, the powder undergoes a precise sieving process. This stage is vital for dividing the powder into specific fractions based on dimensional criteria, a fundamental element given that the Particle Size Distribution (PSD) is a critical parameter directly influencing the suitability of the powder for its intended final application, such as laser powder bed fusion or binder jetting. The subsequent blending stage ensures that the final product is homogeneously mixed, guaranteeing consistent material properties throughout each batch.

Throughout all these sophisticated production stages, the invaluable contribution of our in-house, ISO 17025-certified laboratory is absolutely essential. Our expert laboratory team performs exhaustive analyses of both chemical and physical properties, ensuring that every batch of powder consistently meets the most stringent quality standards and customer specifications. Equally critical are all further comprehensive procedures related to the quality control of the final product, including essential cleaning operations designed to meticulously avoid any risk of cross-contamination between different material batches or alloy types. Such stringent measures are paramount for maintaining the integrity and performance of the metal powders in highly sensitive additive manufacturing applications. Once the powder has successfully passed all internal controls and, consequently, obtained its official certificate of analysis, it is carefully bottled. This crucial step is performed using a semi-automatic dosing machine within a strictly controlled inert environment. This inert atmosphere is critical to protect the sensitive metallic powder from external factors such as moisture and oxygen, which could irreparably damage its properties and compromise its performance. The meticulous stringency with which this final packaging step is carried out is crucial, guaranteeing that the powder remains in pristine condition, ready for delivery and immediate use by our discerning customers worldwide.
