Mighty Buildings, a company aiming to create beautiful, sustainable, high-quality homes, has announced that it has completed delivery of what it claims to be the first 3D printed, Zero Net Energy home. The two-bed, two-bath home is the first in a planned 40+ unit community in Southern California where they are based. 3D printing was integral in not only creating the home faster but also in using less material and waste, making it significantly more sustainable.

You have probably heard of the concept of Net Zero Energy or ZNE before. Though often misunderstood to mean that these buildings consume no energy, what it actually means is that it produces as much energy as it consumes. In the case of Mighty Buildings, they stress that these homes will produce this energy through clean, renewable resources. The concept is a popular one, especially as we are increasingly being forced to face the growing specter of climate change. In fact, in California, where Mighty Buildings is based, the California Energy Efficiency Strategic Plan, conceived in 2017, required that all new residential construction be zero net energy by 2020. This latest project marks the first time a 3D printed home was designed as Zero Net Energy from its inception.

The CEO of Mighty Buildings, Slava Solonitsyn, further commented, “We are excited to be the first company in the world to complete what we believe to be the sustainable housing standard in the future. As a result, housing developers will no longer have to choose between profitability, quality, design and protecting the planet. The first 3D-printed ZNE home ever built is a result of years of R&D processes, including creation of a proprietary, certified construction technology and a revolutionary alternative to concrete which provides drastically lower thermal conductivity. Our manufacturing technology features a high-degree of automation and advanced robotics, enabling us to reduce the completion time by more than half. In this way, the entire home can be constructed within 4-5 months, significantly accelerating onsite completion and resulting in happier home buyers, more productive onsite workers, and higher returns for developers.”
