While many car manufacturers use additive manufacturing to produce finished parts, BMW has decided to use the technology to present its new concept car and offer an attractive scale model to its future customers. Named Vision M Next, this vehicle is a sports car with many futuristic features. Its 3D model can be downloaded free of charge and can be printed on an FDM desktop machine so that everyone can actually see the car. It is part of BMW’s #NEXTGen range which focuses on the cars of tomorrow.

For more than 25 years, the BMW Group has integrated additive manufacturing into its production cycle – the manufacturer has even surpassed the million-piece mark for 3D printing. It is a design and production method that allows BMW to achieve better performance while reducing costs. This time, the company unveils a new use of 3D technologies: it wants to share its vision with as many people as possible around the world by offering a car model to be 3D printed directly at home.

By providing the general public with detailed 3D models of its concept vehicles, BMW hopes to better understand the future of the automotive industry and consumers’ needs, with a particular focus on design. The manufacturer explained that it also wanted to get closer to its community and offer real innovation in a market where competition is fierce. The 3D file is available free of charge on the BMW website; the manufacturer recommends printing the rims and bodywork separately.
