Fillamentum: Paving the Way for Sustainable 3D Printing with Biodegradable Filaments
In the rapidly expanding world of additive manufacturing, 3D printing materials, particularly polymer filaments, continue to dominate the global market. Forecasts from Market Research Future predict this segment alone will reach a staggering $8.1 billion by 2030, underscoring its pivotal role in industrial and consumer applications. However, as global awareness of environmental challenges intensifies—ranging from climate change to resource depletion—the imperative for responsible manufacturing and consumption becomes ever more critical. Navigating the complexities of eco-conscious production in the 3D printing sector can be daunting for businesses and consumers alike. Fortunately for enthusiasts of Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM), a beacon of innovation and responsibility emerges from the Czech Republic: Fillamentum.
For several years, Fillamentum has been at the forefront of filament production, establishing a significant global footprint with product distribution in over 62 countries. Beyond its technical prowess and market reach, what truly distinguishes Fillamentum is its profound commitment to social responsibility, particularly in the realm of sustainability. The company is driven by a passionate mission to drastically reduce waste within the industry, culminating in the creation of its groundbreaking line of fully biodegradable filaments, aptly named NonOilen. To delve deeper into Fillamentum’s philosophy, its strategic responses to contemporary global crises, and its pioneering environmental initiatives, we recently had the opportunity to speak with Josef Dolecek, the visionary CEO and Founder of the company.
3DN: Could you introduce yourself and elaborate on your connection to 3D printing?
My name is Josef Dolecek, and I am the CEO and founder of Fillamentum. My academic background is rooted in chemical technology, a field that profoundly shaped my professional journey. Early in my career, I dedicated a decade to developing advanced polymer materials for the global beverage packaging industry, working with large corporations. This experience provided me with a deep understanding of polymer science, material properties, and industrial-scale production. Eventually, I decided to transition from the corporate environment to entrepreneurship. With the invaluable support of my friends, I founded my own plastic manufacturing facility. Initially, our focus was on producing precise microtubing and other advanced materials, which required meticulous control over material composition and extrusion processes. This foundation proved to be a critical stepping stone. As 3D printing began its massive adoption phase a few years later, the leap to manufacturing precise filaments felt like a natural and logical progression for us, leveraging our existing expertise in polymer extrusion and material science.

3DN: How did Fillamentum come about? What is its core mission and vision today?
The name “Fillamentum” itself is quite unique and directly inspired by our product. It’s derived from the Latin word “filamentum,” which means “violin string,” aptly describing the precise, continuous thread of our filaments. We deliberately added the amendment, ‘Ad(d)ictive polymers,’ to our branding. Our initial and enduring goal was to introduce 3D printing filaments that were so precise, so valuable, and so consistently high in quality that they would, quite literally, create a form of positive addiction among users – an addiction to superior performance and reliable results. Essentially, our overarching mission at Fillamentum is twofold: to develop and manufacture exceptionally high-quality materials specifically tailored for additive manufacturing processes, and simultaneously, to conduct all our operations with the utmost respect and consideration for our environment. We firmly believe that embracing responsible modern technology is not just an option, but a vital necessity for safeguarding our planet for future generations. This belief drives our innovation, guiding us to create products that are not only technologically advanced but also environmentally conscious, proving that performance and sustainability can indeed go hand-in-hand.
3DN: There are a number of different crises happening in the world right now, how is Fillamentum addressing them in their work? Why is this important to you?
Indeed, the world is currently facing a multitude of interconnected crises, and from our perspective, many of these are symptomatic of a broader societal issue: a diminishing emphasis on critical thinking. Our modern, often over-abundant civilization, has perhaps become less vigilant, more susceptible to complacency, and increasingly demanding without fully understanding the underlying consequences. At Fillamentum, we actively counteract this trend by operating on the principles of an ’empowered company.’ Critical thinking isn’t just a desirable trait; it’s a foundational element embedded within our organizational culture. We genuinely believe that by empowering individuals, by fostering an environment where people are encouraged to think independently, challenge assumptions, and take ownership, we can collectively drive positive change in the world. This proactive and empowered mindset has been instrumental in helping us navigate these turbulent times, allowing us to adapt quickly and make informed decisions. Our guiding principles, our clear vision for the future, and above all, our deep passion for what we do – because we believe the best things are only created with genuine passion – serve as our anchors. And, of course, a central pillar of our response to these crises involves a relentless focus on sustainability and dedicated efforts to protect our planet, aligning our business practices with global environmental imperatives.
Fillamentum offers an extensive palette of materials, ensuring vibrant and versatile options for every FDM printing project.
3DN: Could you expand especially on the importance of sustainability and environmental action? What concrete steps has Fillamentum taken in this area?
Sustainability and environmental action are not mere buzzwords for us; they are intrinsically woven into the very fabric of Fillamentum’s identity and operational philosophy. We consider them two of the absolute core pillars of who we are as a company. Our approach is multi-faceted, starting with a foundational principle we champion for everyone, including ourselves: “Think before you print.” This isn’t just a catchy phrase; it’s a profound call to individual responsibility. Every single person engaged in 3D printing has the power to manage and reduce their environmental impact, and the simplest, yet most effective, way to do this is to critically evaluate whether what we are producing is truly necessary. We apply this rigorous self-assessment to our own operations, recognizing that our actions have consequences.
Our commitment to environmental stewardship isn’t new or superficial. Since as early as 2011, the roofs of all our production halls and office buildings have been fully covered with photovoltaic panels. This long-standing investment in solar energy means that a significant portion of our manufacturing processes is powered by clean, renewable electricity, drastically reducing our carbon footprint. While we are in the business of selling filament, our ultimate goal extends beyond commerce; we deeply encourage our users to adopt a similar mindful approach, to be acutely aware of what they are creating and the potential environmental impact their projects might have.
Furthermore, a key strategic objective for us has been to provide a genuine green alternative for every product in our portfolio, crucially, without ever compromising on material properties or performance. This is a significant challenge in material science, but one we’ve embraced wholeheartedly. A monumental achievement in this regard came last year with the introduction of NonOilen. This innovative material represents a world-first: a circular and compostable 3D printing material. NonOilen boasts a unique and patented polymer composition that is not only 100% biodegradable and crafted from renewable resources, but it also remarkably serves as a suitable alternative to many traditional engineering polymers. This means users can achieve high-performance results with a significantly reduced environmental guilt. We are immensely proud to be recognized as trendsetters with NonOilen, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in sustainable additive manufacturing and demonstrating that eco-friendliness doesn’t have to mean a compromise on quality or versatility.
At Fillamentum, passion fuels innovation, driving the company to create cutting-edge materials and sustainable solutions.
Our journey toward a more sustainable future is continuous, and we are far from finished. Building on the success of NonOilen, we have recently launched another inspiring initiative: the recycling of Nylon from discarded fishing nets to create our “Fishy filament by Fillamentum.” This project directly addresses the pressing issue of ocean plastic pollution, transforming harmful marine waste into a valuable and functional 3D printing material. This is more than just a product; it’s a tangible demonstration of our unwavering commitment. We are constantly exploring new avenues, investing in research and development, and refining our processes to consistently minimize our negative environmental impact and champion a truly circular economy within the 3D printing industry. Every step we take is aimed at leaving a healthier planet for future generations, while still providing the high-performance materials our customers expect.
