From Engineering to Innovation: Ramon Mañas’s Journey into 3D Printing
Ramon Mañas, Founder and CEO of Odisei Music
“I’m Ramon Mañas, originally from Barcelona, and I currently reside in Sant Cugat del Vallés, where Odisei Music’s office is located,” Mañas begins, introducing himself. “By profession, I am an Industrial Design Engineer, a background that has been instrumental in my entrepreneurial path. My passions outside of work are music and automotive, both of which require precision, design, and a touch of innovation.”
His initial encounter with 3D printing technologies began during his engineering studies. “At university, we had an FDM Stratasys printer. This machine allowed us to create prototypes for various projects, offering a tangible way to test and refine our designs. It was a foundational introduction to the capabilities of additive manufacturing, even in its earlier forms.”
However, Mañas’s deep dive into the industry truly commenced years later when he joined HP’s 3D printing sales department. “That’s when I became fully immersed,” he recalls. “It required extensive training to thoroughly understand the myriad of 3D printing technologies available on the market. This intensive learning process was crucial, as it enabled me to articulate how the HP Jet Fusion technology I was selling stood apart from competitors, highlighting its unique advantages in terms of speed, quality, and cost-effectiveness for production.”
It was during his tenure at HP that the seeds for Odisei Music were sown. “Working at HP, I began to develop the Travel Sax in parallel – dedicating my afternoons and evenings after my regular workday. From the very outset, I was convinced that the Travel Sax would be manufactured using 3D printing. The advantages of additive manufacturing, such as design freedom, rapid iteration, and the ability to produce complex geometries without costly tooling, made it the ideal choice for bringing my vision to life.” This early conviction in 3D printing’s power laid the groundwork for the innovative approach Odisei Music would adopt.
The Genesis of Odisei Music: Solving a Musician’s Dilemma with the Travel Sax
“Odisei Music was born directly from my unconditional love for music,” Mañas explains, highlighting the deeply personal roots of his venture. “My entire life, since childhood, has been intimately connected with music. I started playing the piano at the conservatory at the tender age of four, gradually expanding my repertoire to include several other instruments. My most recent acquisition, about six years ago, was the saxophone, which I picked up after moving to Berlin to study composition.”
It was in Berlin that Mañas encountered a common challenge faced by many musicians: the practical difficulties of practicing a large, loud instrument like the saxophone daily. “I began to experience the burden of regular saxophone practice. It’s a fantastic instrument, but its size, weight, and volume make it challenging to practice freely, especially in shared living spaces or while traveling. At that point, I realized that as both an engineer and a passionate music lover, I was uniquely positioned to solve this problem.”

His goal was clear and ambitious: “I set out to design an electronic saxophone that was as small and light as possible, an instrument that would allow musicians to practice wherever and whenever they desired, without disturbing anyone. This vision for a truly portable and discreet practice instrument became the driving force behind the Travel Sax.”
“After two years of intense dedication and hard work, and with the invaluable support of the Odisei Music team and a network of talented external collaborators, we successfully designed and brought to life the electronic saxophone, which we proudly named Travel Sax,” Mañas shares. The instrument is a testament to the power of collaborative innovation and the meticulous application of advanced manufacturing techniques.
Odisei Music’s overarching objective extends beyond just creating innovative instruments. “Our core goal is to significantly simplify the process for musicians to learn and express themselves musically, thereby fostering the creation of more music in the world. To achieve this, we continuously design instruments and develop technical solutions that not only make learning easier but also help musicians to constantly improve their craft, breaking down traditional barriers to musical development and practice.”
The Role of HP Jet Fusion: Powering the Production of the Travel Sax
When it comes to the specific additive manufacturing techniques employed, Mañas is unequivocal. “We primarily utilize one of HP’s advanced Jet Fusion printers. This technology is absolutely critical to our manufacturing process.” The choice of HP Jet Fusion (MJF – Multi Jet Fusion) is strategic and deliberate, aligning perfectly with the demands of producing a high-quality consumer electronic instrument.
“This machine allows us to manufacture final parts with exceptional aesthetic and mechanical finishes,” he elaborates. “The surface quality achieved with HP Jet Fusion is superior, which is vital for a musical instrument that needs to feel premium and function flawlessly. Furthermore, the mechanical properties of the parts produced are robust and consistent, ensuring the durability and reliability required for a portable device that will be handled frequently.”

Beyond quality, production efficiency is a key factor. “We also leverage this technology for its high production capabilities. For the type of products we design and manufacture – intricate, functional, and required in batches – HP Jet Fusion offers a superior balance of speed, cost-effectiveness, and quality compared to other additive manufacturing processes. We firmly believe that given our specific needs, it is the technology that best suits us, enabling us to scale production while maintaining our high standards.” The ability to produce complex internal geometries and assemble them into a lightweight, functional device is a direct benefit of this advanced 3D printing technique.
The Transformative Impact of 3D Printing on Musical Instrument Development
Reflecting on the broader implications, Mañas offers a compelling perspective on the significance of 3D printing in his field. “I firmly believe that 3D printing technology is fundamentally reshaping how products are designed and brought to market. It’s offering unprecedented manufacturing possibilities, particularly to new and agile companies like ours that might otherwise face prohibitive barriers to entry with traditional manufacturing methods.”
He emphasizes the tangible benefits experienced by Odisei Music directly. “In our specific case, the ability to launch a complex product like the Travel Sax onto the market in less than a year would have been virtually impossible without additive manufacturing. The speed of prototyping, the ability to iterate designs rapidly, and the capacity to produce final parts on-demand without massive initial investments in tooling are game-changers.” This agility allowed Odisei Music to move from concept to consumer much faster than conventional instrument makers, accelerating innovation in the industry.
“While it’s true that 3D printing still presents certain technical limitations – for instance, regarding material properties, surface finish requirements for specific acoustic instruments, or the scale of very large production runs – its potential is undeniably immense,” Mañas concedes. “Despite these current constraints, 3D printing is, without a doubt, an extremely powerful tool that possesses impressive potential to revolutionize instrument design, customization, and accessibility across the entire music industry.” It democratizes innovation, allowing smaller teams to compete with established giants by offering unique, user-centric solutions.
