Let’s delve deeper into the inspiring projects of these winning start-ups, many of whom shared their insights and expectations for participating in Formnext 2023.
Odapt: Revolutionizing Ostomy Care with Personalized 3D Printed Solutions
The Spanish start-up Odapt is already familiar to many in the 3D printing community, having been featured for their innovative 3D-printed ostomy bag project in late 2022. Globally, an estimated 15 million individuals rely on ostomy bags due to various medical conditions. However, conventional ostomy bags frequently present significant challenges, including issues with leakage, skin irritation, and a poor, non-customized fit. Addressing these critical unmet needs, Odapt has pioneered the development of the first 3D printed disc made from biocompatible silicone. This innovative disc offers a personalized fit, conforming precisely to each patient’s unique anatomy, thereby dramatically improving comfort, security, and quality of life. The adaptability of 3D printing technology not only allows for bespoke designs but also contributes to a more sustainable manufacturing process. Ivana Llobet Leca, CEO & Co-founder of Odapt, expressed her thoughts on this significant win: “We sincerely hope our project and this prestigious award will inspire other healthcare start-ups to fully embrace Additive Manufacturing technology. Our goal is to encourage continued advancements toward user-centered and truly personalized solutions in medicine. Furthermore, we aim to encourage the broader industry to allocate more resources to the healthcare sector, particularly by offering a wider range of biocompatible materials suitable for 3D printing and by accelerating the certification processes for these materials and technologies to comply with stringent medical device regulations.”

Regarding Odapt’s participation in Formnext 2023, Llobet Leca further elaborated on their objectives: “We are particularly keen on connecting with companies that specialize in biocompatible, flexible 3D printing materials, especially silicone, as well as establishing strong relationships with medical device manufacturers and potential investors. Beyond these business objectives, we are also committed to raising awareness about the challenges faced by individuals with ostomy bags and to showcasing the transformative potential of our Odapt project. We look forward to engaging with anyone interested in the exciting future of personalized medicine and how AM can shape it.”
Endless Industries: Advancing Continuous Carbon Fiber 3D Printing for High-Performance Applications
Berlin-based start-up Endless Industries has garnered significant attention for its innovative approach to 3D printing with continuous carbon fiber. This exceptionally durable and lightweight material is indispensable across a range of demanding applications, particularly in automobile manufacturing, aerospace, and mechanical engineering, where both strength and low weight are paramount. Endless Industries has developed a comprehensive proprietary system that includes a unique material, specialized software, and a patented nozzle designed to simultaneously process carbon fiber and plastic. This breakthrough solution enables the highly efficient production of even large-scale parts, overcoming many of the traditional limitations associated with carbon fiber additive manufacturing. Since Endless Industries focuses on the technology itself rather than manufacturing its own 3D printers, their primary goal at Formnext is to leverage the event for strategic collaborations. They aim to connect with leading machine manufacturers, share their expertise, and initiate partnerships that will integrate their cutting-edge continuous carbon fiber printing capabilities into broader industry offerings, thereby accelerating the adoption of this high-performance material.
Helio Additive: Pioneering Thermal Simulation Software for Reliable Polymer and Composite 3D Printing
Helio Additive, a start-up originally founded in China in 2020 and now strategically based in the United States, has been recognized for its revolutionary Dragon thermal simulation software designed specifically for additive manufacturing. This advanced slicing and analysis software is engineered to significantly improve the reliability and success rates of 3D printing results, especially for plastics and composite materials. At its core, the Dragon software meticulously slices 3D models into individual voxels, diligently tracking their thermal progression throughout the printing process. Helio Additive’s expertise lies in understanding and accurately predicting the complex thermal behavior of plastics, which often expand and contract to varying degrees when exposed to heat, leading to print inaccuracies and failures. By leveraging sophisticated physical calculations, Dragon software proactively identifies and prevents common printing errors, enabling faster, more reliable, and ultimately more scalable 3D printing operations. This innovation addresses a critical challenge in additive manufacturing, making complex polymer and composite parts more accessible and predictable for various industrial applications.
Vitro3D: High-Speed Volumetric Additive Manufacturing for Dental and Electronics
Another distinguished winner of the Formnext Start-up Challenge 2023 is Vitro3D, a promising start-up from the United States. Vitro3D has developed a groundbreaking high-speed volumetric additive manufacturing (VAM) technology, poised to revolutionize several industries. This innovative technology is capable of processing a remarkably wide array of materials, including highly viscous resins, and possesses the unique ability to combine multiple materials into a single, cohesive part—all without the need for traditional support structures. The company is actively developing a user-friendly platform designed to allow manufacturers to simply click a button and obtain a finished part quickly, reliably, and sustainably. Vitro3D’s primary target industries are dental and electronics, where their technology promises transformative benefits. In the dental sector, it will enable rapid, direct printing of aligners and other custom prosthetics, streamlining production workflows. For electronics manufacturers, Vitro3D’s technology will facilitate the creation of more complex printed circuit boards (PCBs) without the significant overhead of new tooling, offering unparalleled design freedom and efficiency. Camila Uzcategui, CEO & Co-Founder of Vitro3D, shared her enthusiasm for the recognition: “Vitro3D is deeply honored to be among the winners of the Formnext Start-up Challenge. Our participation at Formnext 2023 is a crucial opportunity for us to connect with the industry’s top talent and gain insights into the latest developments in advanced manufacturing. Progresja New Materials: Championing Sustainable Titanium Recycling for Additive Manufacturing
Polish start-up Progresja New Materials distinguished itself notably for its remarkably sustainable approach to material processing, which earned them not only a spot as a Formnext Start-Up Challenge winner but also the prestigious AM Ventures Impact Award 2023. Their innovative project addresses a critical environmental and economic challenge: the recovery and recycling of titanium for 3D printing across Europe. Progresja New Materials highlights a significant problem: the current recycling rate for end-of-life titanium within the EU is extremely low, a situation the company is determined to change as rapidly as possible. Their ambitious plan involves collecting titanium scrap from various sources across the EU, which then undergoes a meticulous multi-stage process. This includes thorough cleaning, advanced thermochemical treatment, precise machining, and finally, atomization to produce high-quality titanium powder perfectly suited for additive manufacturing applications. Progresja New Materials is currently scaling up its production capabilities and, to support this, plans to establish a comprehensive network of titanium recycling centers strategically located throughout Europe, with a particular focus on proximity to major aerospace industry hubs. For Adrian Kukofka, CEO of Progresja New Materials, Formnext represents the ideal international platform to introduce their groundbreaking initiative to a global audience and firmly establish their presence in the sustainable AM market.
