3DN: How did the RADIAN idea come about?

The genesis of RADIAN traces back to a pivotal moment in 2012 during a university project. We were tasked with designing a ring, and at that time, our university had recently acquired a new 3D printer. Intrigued by the possibilities, we decided to leverage this cutting-edge technology to prototype our ring design. It was during this experimental phase that I genuinely “fell in love” with the entire 3D printing process. The ability to translate a complex digital concept into a tangible physical object with such precision and speed was utterly captivating. What’s even more remarkable is that our very first ring design from that project, affectionately named “Solitaire,” has since become one of RADIAN’s perennial best-selling designs. Its unique aesthetic and innovative construction have garnered significant recognition, leading to its display in numerous prestigious museum shops and exhibitions globally. This initial success solidified our belief in additive manufacturing’s potential. Looking ahead, our ambition for RADIAN is to significantly expand our range of jewelry, actively seeking collaborations with other visionary artists. Our goal is to evolve RADIAN into an even more versatile and globally recognized brand, pushing the boundaries of what contemporary jewelry can be and offering diverse artistic expressions through the lens of 3D printing.

Diverse Technologies and Materials Fueling RADIAN’s Creativity

3DN: What 3D printing technologies do you use? Which materials?

At RADIAN, our commitment to innovation extends to a diverse array of materials and 3D printing technologies, allowing us to offer an extensive range of jewelry creations. This versatility has proven to be a significant advantage, deeply appreciated by our discerning customers who value both choice and quality. For instance, we produce intricate pieces in nylon, utilizing Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) machines. SLS technology, known for its ability to create complex geometries and robust, lightweight objects from a powdered polymer, gives our nylon jewelry a unique matte finish and exceptional durability. This is perfect for designs that require flexibility and a distinctive tactile feel.

For our metallic pieces, we employ different advanced methods. Steel jewelry is crafted through Binder Jetting. This process involves a liquid binding agent selectively joining powdered metal particles, which are then sintered at high temperatures to create a dense, strong final product. This results in pieces with an industrial yet refined aesthetic, known for their strength and resilience.

When it comes to precious metals like brass, silver, and gold, we employ a sophisticated indirect 3D printing method. Here, we first 3D print a highly detailed mold of the jewelry piece in wax. This wax model, crafted with exceptional precision by our printers, then undergoes a traditional investment casting process. The wax model is encased in a ceramic shell, melted out, and then molten metal is poured into the cavity, resulting in exquisite jewelry pieces with flawless surfaces and intricate details. This hybrid approach beautifully marries the advantages of digital design and 3D printing with the timeless craftsmanship of metal casting. It allows us to achieve unparalleled detail and design freedom in precious metals that would be impractical or impossible with direct metal 3D printing for certain geometries.

It’s important to understand that the core spirit of RADIAN transcends mere production; it is about continuous experimentation with novel materials and relentlessly pushing the boundaries of what is achievable in jewelry design. This drive for innovation ensures that our collections remain fresh, cutting-edge, and truly reflective of the limitless possibilities offered by additive manufacturing.

3DN: Why did you turn to additive manufacturing?

Our journey into additive manufacturing was ignited by the design of our “Solitaire” ring, a piece so structurally complex and unique that it simply could not be realized through any conventional jewelry-making technique. The intricate geometry and delicate balance of the design demanded a manufacturing process capable of precision beyond traditional means. Discovering 3D printing was a revelation. I found it profoundly fascinating to be able to design a piece of jewelry entirely digitally, manipulating every curve and angle on a screen, and then, often within the same day, hold a physical, tangible version of that design in my hands. This rapid iteration capability was transformative.

In traditional jewelry making, prototyping is a time-consuming and expensive endeavor, often involving manual carving or extensive mold creation. With 3D printing, we can swiftly prototype countless iterations of our ideas. This agility allows us to test designs, refine ergonomics, and explore aesthetic variations with unprecedented speed and cost-efficiency. This not only accelerates our creative process but also ensures that only the most perfected designs reach our customers. The ability to move from concept to physical object so fluidly unlocks immense creative freedom, allowing us to explore forms and structures that were previously confined to the imagination. We are incredibly excited to witness how the entire world of 3D printing continues to evolve and mature. Being an active part of this pioneering movement, and having the opportunity to share our inspirations and innovations, is incredibly rewarding for everyone at RADIAN. We believe this technology is not just changing jewelry, but the very essence of design and manufacturing.

The Meticulous Craftsmanship Behind RADIAN’s Designs

3DN: Can you tell us more about the manufacturing process of a piece of jewelry at RADIAN?

Certainly. Let’s use our “Crystal” ring as a prime example of the meticulous and iterative process we follow. This particular design took nearly a full year of dedicated work and refinement before we were completely satisfied with every facet. Our journey begins with a foundational hand sketch phase. Even in this digital age, starting with a physical sketch allows for a raw, intuitive exploration of form and concept, capturing the initial artistic vision before the constraints of software.

Once the initial concept is solidified, we meticulously transcribe these sketches into the digital realm. This is where parametric design software becomes indispensable. This advanced software allows us to define relationships between design elements, meaning that modifications to one parameter automatically adjust related elements. This flexibility is crucial for achieving complex, precise geometries and for efficiently iterating through numerous design variations. From this digital model, we seamlessly transition into the extensive prototyping phase. Here, we create multiple physical iterations using our 3D printers, testing everything from wearability and comfort to structural integrity and aesthetic balance. Each prototype is scrutinized, refined, and then reprinted until the design achieves absolute perfection. This iterative process, which can involve dozens of prototypes, ensures that every curve, angle, and dimension is precisely as intended.

Once we have thoroughly tested and verified our creations, ensuring they meet our exacting standards for quality, durability, and design integrity, we then proudly offer them to our customers. This rigorous process guarantees that when you acquire a RADIAN piece, you are investing in cutting-edge jewelry, meticulously crafted with the latest additive manufacturing technology, produced in the most durable and sustainable way possible, all while upholding the highest possible standard of artistic and technical quality.

The Bright Future of Additive Manufacturing in Jewelry

3DN: How do you see the future of additive manufacturing in the jewellery sector?

We firmly believe that additive manufacturing processes are destined to play an increasingly pivotal and transformative role within the jewelry sector. One of the most significant trends we anticipate is the widespread adoption of mass customization. We are already seeing numerous projects emerging that empower customers to personalize their jewelry pieces, and 3D printing is inherently perfect for facilitating this. Imagine designing a ring with a unique engraving, selecting specific geometric modifications, or even co-creating a piece that perfectly reflects individual style and sentiment. This era of hyper-personalized production, or “mass customization,” is truly on the cusp of widespread acceleration, and we hold incredibly high expectations for its growth and impact in this area.

Furthermore, there’s a noticeable shift in consumer perception. People are gradually becoming more accustomed to these innovative production techniques. As the quality of 3D printed objects improves, and as more brands successfully integrate the technology, the initial reservations consumers might have had are slowly diminishing. This growing acceptance will pave the way for even more radical designs and personalized experiences. The future will see an explosion of creative freedom for designers, lower barriers to entry for new talent, and ultimately, a more diverse and exciting jewelry landscape for consumers. We foresee continuous advancements in materials, multi-material printing capabilities, and even more accessible design tools, all contributing to a vibrant future where bespoke, technologically advanced jewelry becomes the norm rather than the exception.
