Revolutionizing Cycling Comfort: Personomic’s 3D Printed Custom Bike Grips Redefine Ergonomics
In today’s rapidly evolving industrial landscape, 3D technologies have emerged as a pivotal force, fundamentally transforming production processes across numerous sectors. The integration of advanced 3D scanners and printers has unlocked capabilities that were unimaginable just a short while ago, most notably enabling mass customization and the precise manufacture of made-to-measure products. This revolutionary advantage has been quickly recognized and adopted by various industries, from medical institutions crafting personalized prostheses, orthoses, and implants, to a growing number of sporting goods manufacturers who now empower their customers to tailor product designs to their specific needs. We’ve previously highlighted innovative applications in sports, such as 3D-printed bicycles, helmets, and running shoes. Building on this trend, Personomic, an innovative startup from Germany, is poised to disrupt the cycling market with its custom-made bicycle grips, aiming to definitively put an end to the pervasive problem of hand complaints among cyclists. We had the opportunity to sit down with founder Paul Eichinger to delve into Personomic’s ambitious goals and their strategic next steps in bringing this personalized comfort to riders worldwide.
3DN: Can you briefly introduce yourself and Personomic, shedding light on the genesis of this innovative venture?

My name is Paul Eichinger, and my fascination with 3D printing began in my youth, where I acquired my first 3D printers. This early passion profoundly shaped my academic and professional journey. I was so captivated by the potential of 3D printing that I pursued the subject in depth throughout my mechanical engineering studies and continued to explore its intricacies thereafter. Currently, alongside my work at Personomic, I also serve as a lecturer for Rapid Manufacturing at Aalen University, which allows me to stay at the forefront of additive manufacturing research and development. At Personomic, our core mission is to proactively prevent and effectively alleviate hand complaints for cyclists through our meticulously designed and manufactured products. We achieve this by seamlessly integrating cutting-edge high-tech manufacturing processes with robust medical knowledge. This unique synergy allows us to make custom-made, ergonomic products accessible to a broad audience at a fair and equitable price point, democratizing personalized comfort. For the production of our bespoke bicycle grips, we rely on state-of-the-art DLP printers from Rapid Shape. These printers are specifically chosen for their exceptional ability to achieve high levels of detail, impressive printing speed, and unwavering reliability. A significant differentiator for Rapid Shape, and a key factor in our choice, is their position as the only DLP printer manufacturer offering stand-alone printers equipped with automated part ejection. This crucial feature is what enables us to implement a fully automated mass personalization workflow, allowing us to efficiently produce highly individualized grips on a large scale without sacrificing quality or precision.
3DN: What are the distinct advantages that 3D printing brings to the production of these personalized bicycle grips, and how do they translate into tangible benefits for the end-user?
The transformative power of 3D printing lies at the heart of our production process, enabling us to meticulously craft a perfectly fitting grip for each individual hand. This level of customization is akin to the precision offered by orthopedic shoe insoles, where the pressure across the foot is optimally distributed. Similarly, with our grips, we can achieve a far superior distribution of pressure on the cyclist’s hand. This optimized pressure distribution is crucial because it effectively prevents the formation of localized pressure peaks, which are often the primary cause of discomfort and nerve compression. By eliminating these pressure hot spots, we ensure that sensitive nerves within the hand are no longer pinched or irritated. As a direct result, users can look forward to experiencing significantly reduced instances of numb fingers, a common and highly frustrating ailment for many cyclists, especially on longer rides. Beyond the fundamental ergonomic benefits, 3D printing also allows for extensive aesthetic and tactile personalization. Thanks to our intuitive customizer tool, customers have the freedom to select not only an individualized engraving that reflects their personality but also their desired texture, enhancing both the look and feel of their grips. This bespoke approach ensures that each grip is not just a functional component but a truly personalized extension of the rider, maximizing comfort, control, and overall cycling enjoyment.

3DN: Mass customization, while incredibly powerful, presents its own set of unique challenges. What are some of the primary hurdles Personomic faces in achieving successful mass customization, and how do you envision the future development and expansion of these customized handles?
Indeed, successful mass customization is a complex undertaking that demands a meticulously engineered production process from end to end. Every single step in the manufacturing chain must be designed with individualization and traceability in mind. A significant challenge lies in ensuring that each printed item can be uniquely identified and tracked at any given moment. This means that if, for instance, one half of an individualized grip pair is rejected during quality control, we must possess the capability to effortlessly remanufacture that specific piece and seamlessly reassign it to its corresponding partner without significant logistical bottlenecks or delays. This sophisticated level of individual tracking and quality assurance is just one of the many intricate challenges we navigate. To address these complexities, we have strategically designed our entire production infrastructure to be inherently flexible and modular. This approach allows us to adapt swiftly to changing demands and incorporate new product variations efficiently. Additive manufacturing is a cornerstone of this flexibility, enabling us to introduce additional personalized products to the market with comparatively minimal investment, thereby accelerating our innovation cycle. For example, the technology readily allows us to expand our offering to include specialized personalized mountain bike handles, catering to different cycling disciplines and preferences. Looking ahead, we foresee a significant expansion in the range of customized cycling accessories. The future of Personomic involves not just grips, but potentially other contact points like saddles and pedals, all benefiting from the precision and personalization that 3D printing offers. Our modular production system is built to scale, allowing us to explore new materials and design iterations, continuously pushing the boundaries of ergonomic cycling equipment. The ultimate vision is a comprehensive ecosystem of personalized cycling components that enhance comfort, performance, and injury prevention for every rider, regardless of their unique biomechanics.
3DN: Do you have any final thoughts or a message you’d like to share with our dedicated readers, particularly the cycling enthusiasts among them?
As a long-time and avid reader of 3Dnatives news, I am incredibly proud and genuinely pleased that our innovative bike handle has garnered enough attention to be featured on this esteemed portal. It’s a testament to the hard work and passion of the entire Personomic team. To all the cyclists within the 3Dnatives readership, I want to emphasize that our custom bike grip offers significant value, even if you don’t typically experience numb fingers while riding your bike. While solving the issue of hand numbness is a primary benefit, our grips deliver a holistic improvement in cycling comfort and control. Furthermore, with our specially formulated silicone material, we are effectively addressing another prevalent and frustrating problem associated with conventional bike grips: their tendency to become sticky and degrade after only a few years of use. This common issue not only detracts from the riding experience but also necessitates frequent replacements. Our durable silicone formulation ensures that you can enjoy the superior ergonomics and tactile feel of our handles for a significantly longer period, providing exceptional value and long-term satisfaction. We believe in creating products that not only enhance performance and comfort but also stand the test of time. We invite everyone to learn more about our project and join our community.
