My name is Taras Kravchouk, and I proudly serve as the CEO, Co-Founder, and Head Designer here at Tarform. My professional background is firmly rooted in industrial design, a field that has instilled in me a deep appreciation for form, function, and user experience. However, I’ve always been driven by a curiosity to explore beyond traditional boundaries, venturing into diverse design disciplines. This passion for creation and innovation led me a few years ago to establish a vibrant makerspace in Brooklyn. This space became a hub for artists and creatives of all stripes, a place where they could hone and teach their crafts, ranging from intricate metal fabrication to the complex art of motorcycle building.

It was within this environment of boundless creativity and practical application that the idea of integrating additive manufacturing into the prototyping stages of Tarform motorcycles naturally emerged. Considering the remarkable accessibility of modern 3D printing technologies and the ever-expanding array of materials available today, it was an obvious choice. This approach proved invaluable, allowing our team to rapidly test, design, and iterate on parts entirely in-house. The ability to do this at a significantly lower cost meant we could continuously optimize every aspect of our designs without the prohibitive investment typically associated with expensive traditional tooling or manufacturing methods. This agility has been a cornerstone of our development process, enabling unprecedented flexibility and innovation.

The Genesis of Tarform Motorcycles: Building a New Breed of Electric Icons

The profound inspiration to create a fundamentally new breed of electric motorcycles struck me while I was engrossed in working on my beloved old Triumph Scrambler. It was during this hands-on experience that a startling realization dawned upon me: for nearly a century, there had been no significant, systemic innovation in how vehicles are fundamentally built. This observation, coupled with the burgeoning global interest in the electric vehicle industry as a whole, compelled me to ask a critical question: why had no one managed to achieve a similar transformative impact with an electric motorcycle? The market was ripe for disruption, yet conventional approaches persisted.

Driven by this insight, I embarked on a journey two years ago to design an electric motorcycle that would not just participate in, but actively embody the future of two-wheeled transportation. From the very outset, my primary focus was multifaceted: to seamlessly integrate modern technologies, to consciously utilize sustainable and environmentally friendly materials, and critically, to do all of this while respectfully referencing the timeless and iconic motorcycle designs of the past. This blend of heritage and innovation was essential to creating something truly appealing.

As the project evolved, our vision expanded beyond simply building an electric motorcycle. It pivoted towards aggressively pushing the boundaries of traditional manufacturing and design processes. This ambitious endeavor naturally led us to explore and ultimately embrace a wide array of advanced technologies, prominently including, but certainly not limited to, the extensive utilization of 3D printing technologies. This shift was instrumental in bringing our groundbreaking vision to life, allowing for unparalleled customization and efficiency.

Unveiling Tarform’s Development Process: Crafting the Future of Riding

The journey of designing the Tarform Scrambler began roughly two years ago, a process that quickly revealed the boundless opportunities and profound complexities inherent in developing a truly premium and cutting-edge electric motorcycle. My ambition was clear: to take the classic, beloved forms of traditional motorcycles and infuse them with state-of-the-art modern technology, thereby creating an entirely new and captivating riding experience. I strongly felt that there was a growing disconnect between contemporary motorcycle design and what truly resonated with the younger generation—a gap that Tarform aimed to bridge with a fresh, forward-thinking aesthetic.

Once we began optimizing our designs for the realities of low-volume manufacturing, the limitations and inefficiencies of traditional production methods became strikingly apparent. From both an economic and a design perspective, relying solely on conventional techniques simply no longer made sense for our innovative approach. This realization spurred me to intensely explore and experiment with various advanced manufacturing methodologies. Thanks to the significant advancements within the 3D printing sector, we were empowered to design and manufacture our motorcycles with unprecedented flexibility. This allowed us to integrate sustainable materials, drastically minimize waste throughout the production cycle, and critically, modify parts on the spot as design refinements emerged. This agile and adaptive process is at the heart of how Tarform brings its vision to life.

The Indispensable Role of Additive Manufacturing Technologies for Tarform

Additive manufacturing has not merely played a role in Tarform’s development; it has been absolutely central to our entire process, profoundly shaping how we bring our electric motorcycles to life. As previously highlighted, the strategic integration of 3D printing has been instrumental in allowing us to optimize countless parts due to the inherent rapid speed of prototyping that this technology offers. This capability has not only accelerated our design cycles but also provided us with an unparalleled opportunity to extensively incorporate a diverse range of sustainable materials into our manufacturing process, aligning perfectly with our eco-conscious philosophy.

On a practical level, a significant majority of the exterior components of our motorcycles have been meticulously 3D printed. We’ve leveraged various 3D printing technologies to achieve optimal results for different parts. For instance, we’ve utilized Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) for larger, less intricate prototypes; Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) for highly functional, robust components; and Stereolithography (SLA) for parts requiring exceptional detail and a smooth surface finish. This versatile approach allows us to choose the best technology for each specific application.

Our commitment to innovation extends to our collaborations. We have forged a valuable partnership with EOS, a recognized global leader in additive manufacturing, to create high-performance metal parts, such as precision-engineered 3D printed levers crafted from aluminum. Furthermore, through our collaboration with Shapeways, we have produced intricate components like distinct logos and elegant dashboard trims, meticulously 3D printed in brass, adding a touch of bespoke craftsmanship to our bikes. Internally, a multitude of mounts, along with the sophisticated headlight lens and its surrounding bucket, have been carefully 3D printed using biodegradable PLA, underscoring our dedication to eco-friendly practices wherever possible. Even the foundational elements like the body style and side panels have been innovatively reinforced using ECO flax fiber, a sustainable alternative that offers comparable performance to traditional carbon fiber while significantly reducing our environmental footprint.

Sustainability at Tarform: A Core Principle, Not a Compromise

Our commitment to sustainability is not merely a design choice or a marketing strategy; it is a fundamental pillar of Tarform’s identity and mission. We recognize the undeniable pressures facing our planet, particularly the escalating challenges within larger metropolitan cities. Transportation networks are constantly on the verge of collapse, and urban areas are becoming increasingly choked with traffic congestion. These issues contribute significantly to rising CO2 levels in the atmosphere, leading to an environment that is, inarguably, deteriorating at an alarming rate. For me, the decision to utilize sustainable materials in our motorcycles extends far beyond their technical viability or efficiency; it is, quite simply, the right thing to do.

As a company that produces physical goods, we bear a profound responsibility. Being sustainable is not just a commendable aspiration; it is our unequivocal duty to design and create products that are inherently non-wasteful and to exhaust every possible avenue to ensure our manufacturing processes and end products cause no harm to our environment. We firmly believe that if innovative companies like Tarform, which aspire to grow and evolve into influential brands, do not take a decisive stand on sustainability early in their journey, the opportunity for meaningful change will be lost. We are determined to demonstrate to the world that embracing sustainable practices does not necessitate compromise on performance, aesthetics, or quality. Modern technology provides us with the tools and capabilities to move decisively towards more sustainable manufacturing and product life cycles, proving that eco-consciousness can coexist with cutting-edge design and exhilarating performance.
