3DN: Could You Introduce Yourself and Your Journey with 3D Printing?
Certainly. I am an architect by profession and one of the co-founders of Aectual, alongside my esteemed colleagues, Hans Vermeulen and Martine de Wit, who are also accomplished architects. Our journey into 3D printing began approximately 15 years ago, during the time we were operating our architecture firm, DUS. We became profoundly fascinated by the capabilities of 3D printing, recognizing its immense potential to revolutionize the entire building industry. We envisioned it as a powerful tool to address numerous challenges, including significantly limiting construction waste, upcycling existing waste materials into valuable resources, and fostering the use of local, sustainable materials. Furthermore, we saw it as a means to unlock unprecedented design possibilities and to truly enable mass customization within architectural contexts.
This profound belief in 3D printing’s transformative power led us to undertake ambitious projects. We embarked on the development of one of the world’s first large-scale 3D printers, a significant technological feat at the time. This groundbreaking work also spurred the initiation of the 3D Print Canal House Project, a comprehensive design-and-build research endeavor that sought to explore innovative housing solutions through the application of extra-large (XL) 3D printing. The project garnered immense interest and attention, drawing numerous inquiries from fellow designers and industry professionals eager to understand our technology and methodology. It was this overwhelming positive response that crystallized our decision to share our advanced technology more broadly. This led to the establishment of Aectual, a dedicated platform where Hans now serves as CEO, Martine as Head of Product, and I proudly hold the role of Creative Director. Through Aectual, we continue to push the boundaries of what is possible in design and manufacturing, making sustainable and customizable solutions accessible to a wider audience.

3DN: What Is The Core Idea Behind Aectual’s Innovative Approach?
At its heart, Aectual is built on the foundational principle of creating fully circular interior objects and advanced architectural systems through the power of XL 3D printing. Our mission extends beyond simply producing beautiful and functional pieces; we are committed to establishing a truly regenerative manufacturing process. We offer a continually expanding catalogue of highly customizable systems, which include sophisticated brise soleils (sun-shading elements), elegant wall paneling solutions, and resilient flooring options. In parallel, our range of individual objects encompasses items such as expansive planters, versatile privacy screens, and distinctive stools.
What truly sets Aectual apart is our commitment to circularity. Our products are not just designed for use; they are designed for endless reuse. After our products have served their purpose, clients can easily return them to us. Upon return, we initiate a meticulous process of shredding these materials, breaking them down into their base components. These reclaimed materials are then fed back into our XL 3D printers, allowing us to reprint them into new, often improved, products. This closed-loop system ensures that our products are genuinely circular, preventing waste and minimizing environmental impact. Furthermore, this iterative process of material reclamation and re-manufacturing allows us to constantly ‘update’ and refine our designs and material compositions, resulting in products that incrementally get better and smarter over time. We’ve observed that designers in the workplace, retail, and hospitality sectors are particularly enthusiastic about our solutions, as we effectively address their growing need to integrate more sustainable and circular designs into their projects, offering both aesthetic appeal and environmental responsibility.
3DN: Can You Describe Aectual’s Design Process?
An intuitive and streamlined design process is paramount to our philosophy at Aectual. To achieve this, we have strategically differentiated our approach for two distinct categories of products: individual objects and integrated systems. For individual objects, such as furniture pieces, customization is made exceptionally straightforward and immediate through our user-friendly online configurators. These digital tools empower users to personalize various aspects of their chosen object—from dimensions and colors to patterns and textures—in real-time, providing instant visual feedback and ensuring a perfect match for their specific aesthetic and functional requirements.
Conversely, for systems that operate on a larger architectural scale—for instance, extensive blind installations seamlessly connected to a glass façade or custom wall panels designed for an entire room—our process is geared towards bespoke generation and precise integration. In this scenario, our clients simply upload their architectural floor plans and select their preferred system from our diverse catalogue. Utilizing advanced algorithms and our in-house expertise, we then generate a custom design that is meticulously tailored to fit their exact specifications and spatial context. This tailored design is accompanied by a precise quote, both of which are delivered to the client within an impressive 48-hour timeframe. This efficient and accurate process ensures that even complex architectural elements are designed to perfectly integrate into any project, maintaining Aectual’s commitment to both customization and rapid delivery.

3DN: What Fundamental Value Does 3D Printing Bring to Your Projects and Your Business Model?
At Aectual, the synergy between 3D printing and circular manufacturing is not merely a beneficial relationship; it is the very cornerstone of our existence and our unique value proposition. These two concepts are intrinsically linked and inseparable within our operational framework. Our core commitment involves creating products entirely from what would otherwise be considered waste materials, and critically, generating absolutely no waste throughout our manufacturing process. This commitment to zero-waste production sets a new standard in sustainable design.
The circularity of our model extends beyond initial production. After a product has fulfilled its lifecycle and served its purpose, we actively encourage and facilitate its return. Once returned, these products undergo a process of shredding, effectively recycling them back into their raw material form. This reclaimed material is then fed back into our 3D printers, ready to be transformed again into new, often smarter and more refined products. This continuous loop of production, use, return, and re-printing exemplifies our dedication to a truly regenerative economy, eliminating the traditional linear ‘take-make-dispose’ model.
Furthermore, the digital nature of both our design and manufacturing processes allows for unparalleled efficiency and innovation. As we continuously generate and analyze more data from each stage of production and material performance, our products inherently evolve. This data-driven feedback loop enables us to optimize designs, improve material properties, and enhance overall product intelligence, leading to smarter and more robust solutions over time. In essence, 3D printing is not just a tool for us; it is the fundamental technological foundation upon which our entire circular product ecosystem and platform are built. It allows us to innovate, customize, reduce waste, and build a more sustainable future, one 3D-printed object at a time.
