3DN: Could you introduce yourself and elaborate on your journey into the world of 3D printing?
Hello! It’s a pleasure to share my story. I’m Alessandro Torre, originally from Bologna but with my roots deeply planted in Puglia, where the flavors of orecchiette and tortellini defined my upbringing. My fascination with 3D printing ignited during my mechanical engineering studies in Milan. The idea of transforming abstract engineering concepts into tangible forms with minimal financial outlay was incredibly compelling. This drive led me to convert my student room into a makeshift workshop, where I embarked on building my very first 3D printers. In those early days, my education wasn’t confined to academic textbooks; instead, online forums and the collaborative spirit of the “open source” philosophy became my primary sources of knowledge and inspiration, guiding my initial steps into this exciting 3D journey. This passion grew steadily over the years, culminating in the establishment of REV3RD, which marks my second venture as an entrepreneur in the additive manufacturing sector. This long-standing connection underscores a deep-seated belief in the transformative power of 3D printing.
3DN: How did REV3RD come into existence, and what was the driving vision behind its creation?
REV3RD is an innovative startup dedicated to the design and manufacturing of cutting-edge large-format 3D printing solutions. Our journey began in early 2020, just before the global pandemic emerged, following a successful bid in the regional PIN call for young entrepreneurs with innovative ideas. This was a pivotal moment for us. Rather than succumbing to the “brain drain” phenomenon that often sees talent leave Southern Italy, or indeed Italy itself, we were determined to build something significant right here in our home region of Puglia. Our ambition was to create an internationally recognized reality, rooted in local innovation. The core objective fueling our endeavors from day one was audacious: to design and build the largest and most innovative extruders in the world, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in large-scale additive manufacturing.
3DN: Could you elaborate on REV3RD’s large-format 3D printing technology and its unique capabilities?
At REV3RD, we truly like to think big, and our technological evolution reflects this philosophy. Our initial stride involved meticulously designing and assembling a 1×1 meter 3D printer, screw by screw. However, we quickly recognized the critical need to push the boundaries of extrusion capabilities. Our focus shifted to developing extruders that were not constrained by the volume of material deposited over time, which led to the birth of our remarkable RD-M series. The RD-M10+ extruder was our first breakthrough, capable of depositing an impressive 12 kg/h of material. Building on this success, we further innovated, introducing the RD-M25, and eventually reaching the pinnacle with the RD-M40, an extruder capable of extruding up to a staggering 40 kg/h. A significant advantage of these advanced extruders is their exceptional versatility; they can be seamlessly integrated onto existing gantry machines or robotic arms. Furthermore, each extruder can be custom-designed and tailored to specific requirements concerning weight, power, compatible materials, dimensions, and the integration of various sensors, offering unparalleled flexibility to our clients.
To rigorously test and demonstrate the immense potential of our large-format solutions, we engineered the RD-HUGE. This impressive 3D printer boasts an expansive working area of approximately 3×2.5 meters, providing an ideal platform for large-scale additive manufacturing. The RD-HUGE is a Cartesian 3-axis machine featuring a cantilever arm, making it suitable for a diverse range of applications across multiple sectors. In the art and design world, it excels in producing bespoke furniture elements, intricate sculptures, and detailed film sets. For the automotive and energy sectors, it’s invaluable for creating precise molds used in the production of high-performance carbon fiber laminated parts. Moreover, high-tech sectors such as aerospace, shipping, and maritime transport have expressed considerable interest in the capabilities of this machine, recognizing its potential for creating large, complex components. Every aspect of our technology, from concept to completion, is designed and developed meticulously in-house. While the startup journey is often characterized by countless sleepless nights, our unwavering commitment is to continuous growth and innovation, always striving to push the boundaries of large-format 3D printing.

3DN: What range of materials are compatible with REV3RD’s advanced pellet extruders?
Our state-of-the-art pellet extruders are engineered for exceptional material versatility, reflecting our commitment to both performance and sustainability. They are fully capable of processing a wide array of polymers, including both virgin and recycled, as well as recyclable materials. This flexibility extends to standard thermoplastics, high-performance engineering thermoplastics, and even fiber-filled composites, such as ABS reinforced with carbon or glass fiber, which offers enhanced mechanical properties. We are also continuously innovating in this area, and excitingly, we have filed a patent for continuous fiber co-extrusion technology. This represents a significant leap forward in creating highly robust and customized parts. We encourage everyone to stay tuned for more developments on this front, as we believe it holds immense potential for future applications in additive manufacturing.
3DN: How critical is the automation of production systems within the realm of 3D printing today?
The development of robust automation systems in 3D printing is an incredibly compelling and vital topic for the future of manufacturing. It holds the key to significantly optimizing production processes and delivering a much more attractive return on investment for companies adopting this technology. While 3D printing has made remarkable strides, it is still generally considered to be at a Technology Readiness Level (TRL) of 6. However, a more comprehensive and sophisticated level of automation could dramatically elevate this parameter, pushing additive manufacturing towards even broader industrial adoption. If the ultimate goal is the mass production of variable geometry products – a holy grail for customized manufacturing – then what remains to be fully integrated into the process are advanced sensors and precise control parameters. These elements are crucial for bringing the material deposition process closer to a “perfect synergy,” mirroring the natural precision and adaptability of human body movement and control. This is precisely why REV3RD makes substantial investments in the ongoing development, meticulous monitoring, and stringent control of its printing processes, striving to achieve an unprecedented level of autonomy and reliability.
3DN: What do you see as the primary advantages and disadvantages of integrating a robotic arm for 3D printing applications?
Robotic arms represent a well-established mechanical system, having been widely deployed for many years in diverse industrial sectors such as welding, painting, and material handling. This widespread adoption translates into several clear advantages for their use in 3D printing. Firstly, they are relatively easy to source, often available at competitive prices due to their broad market penetration. Secondly, the inherent control of six or more degrees of freedom (DoF) provides exceptional flexibility of movement, allowing for complex geometries and access to difficult-to-reach areas. This kinematic versatility can open up new possibilities for how objects are printed. However, integrating robotic arms into 3D printing also presents specific challenges. One significant hurdle is the “control headache” they often generate; programming and precisely controlling their movements for additive manufacturing can be considerably more complex than with traditional Cartesian machines, which operate on simpler XYZ coordinates. This complexity can lead to longer setup times and a steeper learning curve. Another notable disadvantage arises when high dimensional tolerances are critical, especially when significant material removal processes might follow. Robotic arms, while flexible, are generally less accurate than their gantry or Cartesian counterparts when extreme precision is required for the final dimensions of a printed part.
REV3RD thoughtfully integrates robotic arms into its advanced 3D printing systems for enhanced flexibility.
3DN: How is REV3RD actively addressing the critical issues of sustainability and promoting the circular economy through its operations?
At REV3RD, sustainability and the circular economy are not just buzzwords; they are embedded in the very fabric of our identity and mission. Our company name itself, REV3RD (pronounced “Reverd”), is a testament to this commitment. It cleverly combines the English prefix “Re-,” signifying renewal and circularity, with the Italian word “verde,” meaning “green.” This fusion encapsulates the core spirit of our brand. We firmly believe that 3D printing and sustainability are not just complementary but intrinsically linked for two fundamental reasons. Firstly, additive manufacturing is inherently a more sustainable production process compared to conventional subtractive manufacturing methods. Traditional techniques often generate significant material waste through cutting, milling, and grinding. In stark contrast, 3D printing, by its very nature, is an additive process; it only deposits the precise amount of material required to construct an object, drastically minimizing waste. This “less waste” principle offers a substantial environmental advantage. Secondly, and equally important in today’s world grappling with pollution, waste disposal challenges, and mounting waste, is the ability to print objects using recycled and recyclable materials. This capability adds immense value, transforming what would otherwise be discarded waste into valuable resources. While the complete eradication of plastic from our planet might seem like a utopian dream, the practical reality of recycling plastics and giving them a new, useful life through advanced 3D printing technologies is not only possible but also a powerful and tangible solution that REV3RD is committed to advancing.
