The scalability and automation of additive manufacturing are critically important today, especially as the industry strives for greater integration into mainstream production. However, a significant hurdle remains: the AM process still heavily depends on the individual manufacturer’s design philosophy for their machines and their decisions regarding system connectivity. While the concept of automating these systems is not only innovative but also absolutely essential for widespread industrial adoption, we are currently observing a concerning trend. More and more manufacturers are opting to create closed ecosystems around their hardware and software. This approach, unfortunately, severely limits users’ freedom to choose the most suitable printers and types of printers for their specific needs. Ultimately, this often forces companies to base their entire additive manufacturing workflow on a single printer manufacturer, leading to vendor lock-in and reduced flexibility.

We encountered this very issue firsthand last year during the development of our scheduling module, which is a crucial component for effective automation. Obtaining the necessary APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) to connect seamlessly to different types and brands of machines proved to be a significant challenge. This lack of open access and interoperability became a major roadblock in our efforts to create truly automated and optimized workflows. This limitation has a profoundly negative impact on the entire industry by restricting the agility and flexibility that are vital for achieving genuine automation and efficient processes. To truly foster innovation, enhance efficiency, and unlock the full potential of automation in additive manufacturing, it is absolutely crucial to advocate for and establish open access to machines and their operational data. This openness would enable the development and automation of workflows that are highly adaptable, future-proof, and not inherently tied to a singular manufacturer’s ecosystem. I firmly believe that promoting and achieving this level of open access and interoperability is the single most important aspect for driving creativity, accelerating technological progress, and ensuring the robust growth of automation within the additive manufacturing industry.
