Revolutionizing Luxury: How 3D Printing Brought Dior’s Heritage to Life at the Paris Gallery
The name Dior resonates globally, an undeniable icon of French haute couture and timeless elegance. Synonymous with unparalleled luxury and groundbreaking design, the house of Dior has long captivated the fashion world. Yet, what many might not realize is the recent, avant-garde transformation of the illustrious Dior Gallery, nestled on the prestigious Avenue Montaigne in Paris. Since March 9th, this revered space has unveiled a breathtaking exhibition, where thousands of meticulously crafted 3D printed objects now adorn its magnificent main staircase, offering visitors an unprecedented journey through the company’s storied heritage collection. This innovative display, a stunning trompe-l’oeil dubbed “DIORAMA,” represents a fusion of traditional luxury and cutting-edge additive manufacturing.
The monumental task of producing these intricate replicas fell to LA FERME 3D©, recognized as one of France’s largest and most advanced 3D printing facilities. Their expertise allowed for the precise reproduction of celebrated Dior artifacts – from iconic handbags and sophisticated shoes to exquisite perfume bottles and elegant hats. The Visionaries Behind DIORAMA: ALIGHIERI Agency
The genesis of this extraordinary project can be traced back to the ALIGHIERI agency, founded by the visionary duo Simon Jaffrot and Noémie Bourgeois. With nearly two decades of profound experience immersed in the world of art – exploring its museums, orchestrating exhibitions, and championing the development of significant works – Jaffrot and Bourgeois possess a unique understanding of artistic presentation and narrative. Their deep connection with Dior began in 2014 when they pioneered a novel staging of original accessories from the Dior Heritage collection. This initial display, characterized by its elegant color gradients, quickly became a signature scenography, recurrently featured in all subsequent exhibitions by the fashion house, a practice that continues to this day.
The ambitious scope of the Dior Gallery project presented a formidable challenge, pushing the ALIGHIERI agency to explore beyond their traditional methodologies. They envisioned a display that was not only modulated and reproducible but also capable of being implemented on an unprecedented scale. Such a grand vision proved impossible to realize with conventional artistic production methods, necessitating a paradigm shift in their approach. It was this pivotal moment that marked the commencement of their exhilarating adventure into the realm of 3D printing. Embracing this advanced technology allowed them to translate their intricate designs and extensive heritage into a physical, immersive experience that would captivate and inspire visitors, making the DIORAMA an unforgettable spectacle.

LA FERME 3D© Deploys Extraordinary Printing Resources
Recognizing the immense technical demands of the DIORAMA project, the ALIGHIERI agency sought the expertise of LA FERME 3D© to assess its feasibility. The project’s ambitious timeline and the sheer volume of objects slated for reproduction necessitated a rapid and substantial scaling of resources. In response, LA FERME 3D© made a strategic decision in July to significantly expand its already extensive fleet of VOLUMIC 3D printers. This pivotal investment culminated in the acquisition of over 30 state-of-the-art machines, all engineered for continuous, non-stop operation, thereby guaranteeing the high production volumes required for such a prestigious undertaking.
Beyond its impressive in-house capabilities, LA FERME 3D© adeptly leveraged a network of trusted partners to achieve its formidable manufacturing objectives. By December 2021, this collaborative ecosystem had grown to dedicate more than 100 machines solely to the Dior project, underscoring the unprecedented scale and concerted effort involved. This rapid deployment of resources and strategic partnerships were critical in meeting the stringent demands of accuracy, speed, and volume for a display of this caliber.
Florent Carasco, the astute Founder of LA FERME 3D©, reflected on the magnitude of the endeavor: “This is undoubtedly one of the most significant challenges our teams at LA FERME 3D© have ever encountered since the company’s inception. Our primary goal was to ensure the timely installation of these thousands of objects within the windows of one of the world’s most exquisite galleries. Thanks to the unparalleled precision and inherent robustness of the VOLUMIC 3D printers’ mechanics, we were empowered to push the boundaries of extreme settings, effectively ‘overclocking’ the equipment. This allowed us to produce incredibly complex objects at speeds previously unimaginable. This winning combination of advanced hardware and our team’s deep expertise was, without a doubt, the true key to the successful execution of this giant production.” His words highlight not only the technical prowess but also the human dedication that underpinned the project’s success, demonstrating how innovation and skill can overcome monumental obstacles in the realm of luxury manufacturing.

Crafting Perfection: Making the 3D Replicas for Diorama
The Dior Gallery project extended far beyond the mere act of 3D printing; it demanded an uncompromising commitment to replicating, with absolute fidelity, the priceless collection pieces from the emblematic French haute couture house. The foundational step in this intricate process involved the meticulous digitization of each object within the treasured collection. Utilizing state-of-the-art, high-performance 3D scanners, the goal was to capture every minute detail. Fineness and resolution were paramount; every delicate seam, every intricate embellishment, and every subtle fold had to be recorded with unwavering precision. This critical and painstaking work was expertly executed by Florian Moreno of AGP and his dedicated teams, ensuring that the digital twins were true to the physical originals. Following this, LA FERME 3D© undertook the crucial task of refining and reworking these highly detailed files, optimizing them to be perfectly compatible with the demands of FFF (Fused Filament Fabrication) 3D printing technology.
For a relentless period spanning over six months, the array of VOLUMIC 3D printers operated ceaselessly, running day and night to fulfill the production requirements. The culmination of this monumental effort saw more than 100,000 hours of printing recorded, consuming over one ton of biosourced material. The choice of biosourced material underscores an commitment to sustainability, demonstrating that luxury production can align with eco-conscious practices. Following the rigorous printing phase, the objects entered the equally demanding stage of assembly and post-processing. Each 3D printed replica underwent a meticulous painting process, often augmented with the careful addition of original jewelry and accessories to enhance their authenticity and visual appeal. This was a long-term project that required the teams at LA FERME 3D© to not only maintain but significantly elevate their existing skills, continuously adapting to meet the exacting standards of the ALIGHIERI agency, the prestigious DIOR house, and the strict deadlines imposed. In total, a staggering more than 10,000 hours of post-processing were dedicated to achieving the flawless final result, transforming raw prints into exquisite artistic renditions.

This final stage presented a significant logistical challenge, requiring meticulous planning and execution to meet the stringent deadlines set for the Gallery’s official reopening. Beyond mere placement, the teams were tasked with the precise adjustment and calibration of each artwork, ensuring every piece contributed perfectly to the overall aesthetic and narrative of the DIORAMA.
The installation demanded an extraordinary level of precision and coordination. The specialized team responsible for the setup had to adhere to a very specific order for placing the objects, a task made even more complex by the narrow confines of the showcases. This intricate process also required real-time identification of any potentially missing pieces, which were then promptly communicated to the production team for immediate rectification. This dynamic problem-solving ensured that no detail was overlooked, and the grand vision remained uncompromised.

This thoughtful blending of replica and original creates a visually stunning and emotionally resonant display – a tapestry of history, innovation, and artistry. The result is a vibrant, harmonious, and colorful spectacle that truly defines the charm and unique identity of the DIORAMA. In total, an astounding 1,874 pieces were masterfully installed within the showcases encircling the grand staircase, among which were 452 exquisite miniature dresses. Featured prominently are iconic items such as the celebrated Miss Dior perfume bottle from 1947, a symbol of Dior’s earliest triumphs in fragrance, and a replica of the legendary dress worn by Lady Diana at the Met Gala in 1996, a moment that cemented its place in fashion history.
