Fernando Hernández, Managing Director for Europe
My journey into technology began with an early and profound passion for IT. I pursued Computer Sciences, driven by a fascination that started at a very young age. I vividly recall my childhood days, immersed in the world of my 8-bit microcomputer – an old Amstrad with distinctive rubber keys. At just 10 years old, I was already coding my own programs and games, a testament to the nascent computer era. Many of us who grew up playing with and programming these early machines went on to create and shape the digital world we inhabit today, forging the foundations of modern technology.
My first encounter with 3D printing technology came in 2013, a pivotal moment when I was approached by the renowned tech giant New Kinpo. Looking back, the timing couldn’t have been better. After more than a decade of working in the dynamic computer component industry, I was eager for a new and significant challenge. The opportunity to help bring such a revolutionary and innovative technology as 3D printing directly to consumers was incredibly compelling, and I was immediately captivated. 3DN: How did XYZprinting start and what were its first objectives?
When XYZprinting was founded in 2013, the landscape of 3D printing was vastly different from what we know today. At that time, 3D printing technology was predominantly confined to highly specialized industrial and engineering applications, catering primarily to large enterprises and a small niche of dedicated hobbyists. The printers available on the market were exorbitantly priced, complex to operate, and certainly not designed for the average consumer or small business. This created a significant barrier to entry, limiting the technology’s widespread adoption and potential impact.
XYZprinting emerged with a clear and ambitious mission: to revolutionize this paradigm by designing “plug-and-play” 3D printers that were not only comprehensive in their capabilities but also remarkably user-friendly and, critically, affordable for the everyday consumer. Our flagship product, the da Vinci 1.0, embodied this vision perfectly. Its launch for an unprecedented €599 garnered worldwide attention, instantly positioning it as the most affordable 3D printer on the market. By 2014, it was readily available across Europe through more than 500 retail outlets, marking a true turning point for the industry. The rapid success of the da Vinci 1.0 paved the way for the swift introduction of additional models within the da Vinci printer series, consistently disrupting the industry with their accessibility and performance. We didn’t just make a product; we established a significant footprint, setting a new course for the entire 3D printing sector. Today, professionals, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and even retailers are increasingly incentivized to integrate 3D printing into their operations, and its utility in classrooms as a powerful teaching tool for the next generation is becoming indispensable.
