Their commitment to the circular economy has earned them widespread recognition and support, not only from public administrations but also from esteemed private initiatives in the dynamic fields of art and architecture. To delve deeper into their pioneering work and vision, we had the distinct pleasure of interviewing one of its visionary co-founders, Stefano Giovacchini.
Unveiling Stefano Giovacchini’s Journey into Sustainable 3D Printing
Greetings! My name is Stefano Giovacchini, and I proudly serve as a designer and co-founder of r3direct. Our company stands at the vanguard of innovation, meticulously experimenting with the application of recycled and inherently sustainable materials within the realm of large-format 3D printing. My personal commitment to the principles of the circular economy spans many years, a passion that I also impart as an educator, teaching “Design for the Circular Economy” at the prestigious School of Sustainability in Milan. Within r3direct, my primary focus revolves around the crucial research into form and functional applications for novel materials, meticulously sourced from circular and sustainable supply chains. My initial encounter with 3D printing was ignited by a deep fascination with open-source technologies and free software. During my involvement with the LUG (Linux User Group) in my hometown of Lucca, a friend and I embarked on an exciting adventure: acquiring one of the very first kits from the pioneering RepRap project. The journey to achieve that inaugural print was truly an odyssey, marked by challenges and triumphs, but it remains an experience I recall with immense joy and satisfaction. It was through 3D printing that I discovered the profound opportunity to forge an entirely new career path. Today, r3direct is dedicated to creating an array of products and services that, quite simply, would not exist without the capabilities afforded by 3D printers and our innovative approach.

The Genesis of r3direct: A Mission for Circularity and Innovation
The inception of r3direct was catalyzed by a compelling call for innovative circular economy ideas, launched by the municipality of Capannori (LU). This region is renowned as a “recycling municipality” and a prominent advocate for the zero-waste movement. I participated in this tender alongside Cristiano Cavani and Marco Paganucci, who would later become my esteemed partners. Our collective vision was ambitious yet clear: to recover plastic waste from separate collection streams and transform it into sustainable, tangible products for the local community. The municipality was deeply impressed by our proposal, leading to our successful bid. This initial triumph paved the way for a pivotal research and development partnership, established a year later, with Revet S.p.A. Revet is a crucial entity, responsible for separating multimaterial waste across 90 percent of Tuscany. Our collaboration specifically focused on utilizing recycled plastic granules in large-format 3D printing, a key innovation for our operations. To this day, our partnership with Revet remains strong, continuing to yield groundbreaking results across various collaborative projects, solidifying our commitment to a truly circular production model.
Showcasing r3direct’s Most Impactful and Innovative Projects
R3direct thrives on collaboration, especially with visionary designers, and it is from these many synergies that truly compelling and impactful projects emerge. While every project holds unique significance, our public furniture installations consistently deliver the most profound sense of satisfaction. A prime example is Desko®, an innovative model of street furniture meticulously designed by four talented young Florentine architects. This concept redefines outdoor public spaces, offering an inviting environment for study and work. What makes Desko® truly remarkable is its self-sufficiency, as it is entirely powered by an integrated solar panel, embodying sustainable design at its core. R3direct has been entrusted with both the intricate engineering and the precise production of these units. In a significant milestone, two Desko® units were installed in a prominent park in Florence in March, providing an eco-friendly and functional amenity for citizens. Another highly noteworthy collaboration involved the esteemed architect Mario Cucinella. For his groundbreaking “Design with Nature” installation, showcased at the prestigious Milan Furniture Fair 2022, r3direct proudly manufactured 80 bespoke stools. The production of these stools utilized approximately 280 kg of post-consumer plastic, diligently collected through door-to-door recycling programs, further demonstrating our commitment to transforming waste into valuable design elements. These projects highlight our ability to merge aesthetic design with practical environmental solutions, creating a tangible impact on urban landscapes and public perception.

Our commitment to sustainability and innovative design extends to educational collaborations as well. In partnership with the School of Sustainability in Milan, we successfully 3D printed approximately 40 unique seats for “Kaboom,” a significant public event dedicated to sustainability that took place in Bologna in 2020. This project underscored the practical application of our recycled materials in temporary, high-impact installations. Beyond these large-scale collaborations, I must also highlight certain objects that I personally design, which hold a special place in my heart due to their intrinsic connection to our manifesto. One such creation is the Magma ceiling lamp, a striking piece crafted in 2019. This lamp was ingeniously printed using “dirty” urban waste, its rugged exterior beautifully contrasted by an internal coating of delicate gold leaf. The Magma lamp serves as a powerful symbol, a physical manifestation of r3direct’s core mission: transforming discarded materials into objects of beauty and function. It has been proudly displayed in various international exhibitions, sparking dialogue about the potential of sustainable design and material repurposing.
Delving Deeper into r3direct’s Transformative U.S.E. Project
The U.S.E. project has been a central focus for r3direct for several years now, representing a comprehensive research and design initiative that ingeniously unites industry, urban planners, and local government bodies. The initial concept for U.S.E. originated from an insightful thesis by a young architect, Giulia del Grande. Her vision addressed the pervasive presence of concrete anti-terrorism barriers – structures that, regrettably, remain necessary and legally mandated for public events. Giulia proposed an innovative solution: covering these utilitarian barriers with a system of modular, interchangeable elements that could simultaneously provide valuable services to citizens. These elements were envisioned to transform mere barriers into functional benches, attractive planters, and convenient bicycle racks, thereby enhancing urban utility and aesthetics. At r3direct, we eagerly embraced the opportunity to develop the first prototypes for this ambitious project. The outcome was nothing short of revolutionary: the creation of the inaugural example of public furniture crafted from recycled plastic materials using our advanced 3D printing technology. This endeavor culminated in the widely recognized U.S.E. benches, one of which has been prominently installed in the historic center of Lucca, serving as a tangible testament to urban innovation and sustainability.
A significant aspect of the U.S.E. project lies in its innovative material sourcing. The benches were fabricated using plastic derived from recycled polyacrylate packaging, commonly known as Tetrapak-type containers. This specific material is a unique blend of polyethylene with a small percentage of aluminum. What makes this particularly impactful is that this blend is produced in a specialized plant located within our own province, a facility that stands as a unique operation within Europe. From the recycled Tetrapak, the plant processes both recycled paper objects and the specific granules that we meticulously test and subsequently utilize in our large-format 3D printers. This localized, closed-loop system perfectly embodies the principles of the circular economy, transforming complex multi-material waste into high-value urban furniture. While the U.S.E. project is currently in an experimental phase, demonstrating its potential and gathering crucial data, we are immensely proud to announce that by 2023, it is slated to transition into a fully-fledged product, ready for broader implementation and revolutionizing how cities approach public spaces and waste management.
