3DN: Can you introduce yourself and explain your connection with 3D printing?
Hello, I’m Jooyeon Song, and I am a Co-founder of Mani.me. My initial encounter with 3D printing was during a gap year from university when I was just 19 years old. I was working as an IT assistant at the Hyundai Engineering Center in India. During my time there, I was constantly fascinated and utterly mesmerized by the way designers were able to transform abstract concepts from their minds into tangible, real-world objects, with 3D printing playing a pivotal role in this transformative process. Witnessing this innovative capability ignited a profound curiosity within me, compelling me to explore further. From that point on, I began to diligently study CAD modeling and immerse myself in the intricacies of 3D printing technology, understanding its potential to revolutionize design and manufacturing.
Founders of Mani.me: Jooyeon & David Miro Llopis
My co-founder and business partner, David Miro Llopis, brings a complementary and equally impressive technical background to Mani.me. He pursued his education in industrial engineering at CentraleSupelec in Paris, a highly regarded institution known for its rigorous engineering programs. His academic journey culminated in a fascinating graduation thesis focused on the generation of plasma, where he not only designed but also successfully 3D printed a fully functional plasma reactor. This project vividly demonstrates his profound expertise in advanced manufacturing techniques and his capability to apply theoretical knowledge to practical, complex engineering challenges. Beyond his academic achievements, David possesses a deep-seated passion for product creation, consistently seeking to integrate novel technologies into innovative solutions. 3DN: How did the idea of creating Mani.me come about?
As you might infer, I have always had a deep appreciation and love for manicures. However, during my career as a management consultant, a profession characterized by demanding schedules and extensive travel, I frequently found myself incredibly frustrated. It was perpetually difficult to carve out the necessary time to visit a nail salon. The thought of committing two to three precious hours from an already packed agenda felt like an insurmountable challenge. I even attempted to do my own manicures at home, purchasing an array of nail polish bottles. Unfortunately, my DIY efforts often resulted in less-than-perfect looking nails, especially on my dominant hand, a collection of unused polish bottles, and often, a rather messy room that added to my stress rather than alleviating it. This recurring inconvenience highlighted a significant gap in the market for a more accessible, efficient, and professional-grade manicure solution.
The turning point came when I was working in Finland. My sister, aware of my struggles, sent me a set of fake nails that were immensely popular in Korea at the time. While convenient, these mass-produced nails were designed for an “average size,” meaning they rarely fit my nails perfectly. The aesthetic was often disappointing, and more importantly, they felt incredibly uncomfortable, creating a constant sensation of artificiality. They simply didn’t provide that feeling of being truly “put together” or polished. It was then that a profound realization struck me: ready-to-use manicures *should* be tailor-fitted. It seemed like such an obvious solution. Almost immediately, I connected this need for personalized fit with my existing passion for 3D printing. I saw the potential for additive manufacturing to bridge this gap, offering a way to create perfectly customized nails that were both comfortable and beautiful, transforming a frustrating experience into a seamless and enjoyable one. This personal frustration, combined with my technical background, was the catalyst for Mani.me.

3DN: What are the different steps to create 3D printed nails?
The journey of creating a perfectly personalized set of 3D printed nails for our customers is a sophisticated yet streamlined process, beginning with the customer’s hands themselves. We have invested significantly in developing our proprietary photogrammetry software. This advanced technology is capable of seamlessly transforming two-dimensional image information, captured by a standard smartphone camera, into a highly accurate three-dimensional digital model. Crucially, this software generates a unique and precise 3D model for each individual nail, ensuring an unparalleled level of customization and fit. This step is fundamental to our promise of bespoke manicures.
Our customers initiate the process by simply taking a few pictures of their hands using our dedicated mobile application. These images provide the essential data for our system. Once captured, our software meticulously constructs a detailed 3D model of each nail. With these precise 3D models serving as the foundational base, we can then generate a specific 3D pattern file corresponding to any design our customer selects from our extensive and stylish gallery. This digital file, perfectly contoured to the customer’s unique nail shape and size, is then sent to our advanced 3D printers, which bring the design to life with remarkable precision and speed. The entire process ensures that every set of Mani.me nails is not just beautiful, but also perfectly tailored to the individual, guaranteeing comfort and a flawless aesthetic.
From a customer’s perspective, the experience is designed to be intuitive and enjoyable, offering a modern alternative to traditional salon visits:
- **Explore and Discover:** Customers begin by browsing our curated digital gallery, which showcases the trendiest colors, innovative patterns, and exclusive designs created by talented artists and designers from around the globe. This ensures a wide variety of choices to suit every style and occasion.
- **Personalized Fitting:** For their very first order, customers complete a simple fitting process. This involves taking just five specific photographs from their smartphone camera, guided by our app. This one-time setup captures the unique contours and dimensions of their nails, ensuring every subsequent order is a perfect fit.
- **Flexible Ordering:** After fitting, customers can choose to check out a single, exquisite set of nails for a special event or opt for a convenient subscription plan. The subscription offers the flexibility to receive additional sets regularly, allowing them to effortlessly change their nail fashion to match various occasions, seasons, or personal preferences.
