Anyone who has used a desktop resin printer knows the print itself is only half the job. What follows is a messy routine: lifting a part still coated in uncured resin off the build plate, moving it to a separate wash station, letting it dry and then curing it under UV light. Each handoff is another chance for resin to end up on your gloves, tools or workspace instead of staying on the print. Resin printer maker UniFormation wants to remove those handoffs altogether with the S10, which it bills as the world’s first desktop fully automated resin 3D printer. In practice, that means printing, washing and drying all happen behind a single closed door. Ahead of the Kickstarter campaign, we take a closer look at how the S10 works and whether all-in-one automation could shape the future of consumer resin printing.

How the fully-automated workflow operates

The S10 uses a 16K mono LCD and a 405 nm light source to print. Once printing finishes, the build platform rotates to drain excess resin, then rotates back. As the platform moves across to the wash tank, which holds up to 9 L, a cleaning cover slides over the resin vat.
