iFactory3D Unlocks Infinite Length 3D Printing with New Conveyor Belt System

The iFactory One: Revolutionizing Desktop 3D Printing with Continuous, Automated Production

In the dynamic landscape of additive manufacturing, a young German startup named iFactory3D is making waves with a truly innovative approach to FDM desktop 3D printing. They have engineered a distinctive machine, the iFactory One, which ingeniously integrates a conveyor belt as its build platform. This groundbreaking design allows for the seamless creation of parts of virtually any length and facilitates continuous, uninterrupted series production. The iFactory One made a spectacular debut on Kickstarter, swiftly garnering over $100,000 in pledges within its first week, signaling strong market interest and validating its unique value proposition.

Beyond its novel conveyor belt system, the iFactory One is equipped with advanced features designed to enhance user experience and efficiency. It boasts a real-time print error detection system, known as PrinterGUARD, which allows users to monitor the printing process remotely and intervene promptly, thereby minimizing material waste and saving valuable time. iFactory3D aims to democratize continuous 3D printing, making this sophisticated technology accessible to a broad audience, including enthusiastic amateurs, with an attractive price point of approximately $1,000. To delve deeper into the capabilities and vision behind this revolutionary 3D printer, we sat down with Artur Steffen, the insightful CEO of iFactory3D.

3DN: Can you introduce yourself and describe your relationship with 3D printing?

My journey with additive manufacturing and related technologies spans quite a significant period, though my direct involvement in the sector is more recent. Prior to 2018, when the concept for the iFactory One 3D printer first began to materialize, my professional life wasn’t directly intertwined with 3D printing itself. However, the broader realm of manufacturing processes, in their myriad forms, was certainly not new to me. I had the privilege of visiting numerous factories across Europe, gaining invaluable insights into complex business workflows and understanding how diverse utility equipment and specialized parts are engineered and produced. This comprehensive background in manufacturing, coupled with a keen eye for operational efficiency, became foundational. It equipped me with the unique perspective and practical knowledge necessary to conceptualize and develop what I believe is a high-potential product – one that I fervently hope will significantly contribute to and accelerate the evolution of the 3D printing industry as a whole.

3DN: Why did you decide to create iFactory3D?

The inception of iFactory3D in 2020 was a direct result of a powerful collaboration with my esteemed business partner, Martin Huber, a remarkable German inventor and business chemist. Martin’s boundless enthusiasm is truly infectious; he possesses an unwavering passion for conceptualizing and bringing to life novel creations that offer tangible value to the community. The catalyst for the iFactory One emerged a few years prior, when Martin, deeply immersed in developing his latest invention, found himself in need of numerous custom parts. The estimated cost for outsourcing the printing of these components was staggering, around $20,000. As a profoundly pragmatic individual, Martin sought to circumvent this exorbitant expense and time commitment by attempting to print these parts himself. Unfortunately, this endeavor quickly spiraled, leading him to acquire so many 3D printers that he effectively ended up managing a bona fide 3D printing farm.

However, this “farm” presented its own set of significant challenges. These devices proved exceedingly difficult to supervise, demanding an inordinate amount of Martin’s time and tireless effort. The sheer resources he had expended, combined with the glaring imperfections and inefficiencies he observed within the existing desktop 3D printing market, ignited a fervent desire within him to explore innovative opportunities and develop superior forms of product and process enhancement. These experiences were the crucible in which our core solution, the iFactory One, was forged. Since 2018, when we formally committed to transforming our ideas into a tangible reality, there has been an unrelenting dedication to refining the 3D printer prototype. Our singular objective was to achieve the highest possible degree of perfection and user-friendliness.

Ultimately, in the summer of 2020, iFactory3D was officially incorporated, marking a pivotal moment. By November 2020, we proudly introduced the iFactory One to the public: the world’s first pyramid-shaped conveyor belt 3D printer capable of printing objects of virtually infinite length or producing an entire product lineup without requiring any constant user input or manual intervention. The project’s triumphant launch on Kickstarter, where it surpassed its $100,000 funding goal in an astonishingly short few days, underscored the profound need and enthusiasm for such a disruptive innovation.

Thanks to these devices, the most imaginative and incredible projects can be brought to vivid life with unprecedented ease! 3D printing technology is profoundly promising, offering an overwhelming and continually expanding range of applications across countless spheres of human endeavor. It holds immense prospects for inventors, creative specialists, and even the everyday hobbyist. Modern 3D solutions possess the capacity to create things never before expected or even imagined, from a whimsical figurine to a highly functional arm prosthesis. This new generation of 3D printers embodies nearly infinite potential, and our iFactory One stands as a compelling testament to that extraordinary fact, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in desktop manufacturing.

3DN: Can you tell us more about the features of the iFactory One?

The iFactory One is engineered to provide its users with a suite of critical and distinct advantages that truly set it apart in the 3D printing market. Foremost among these is its pioneering status: the iFactory One proudly stands as the first conveyor belt 3D printer that is not only readily available but also genuinely affordable for the mass market. This accessibility makes it equally invaluable for seasoned professionals within the 3D printing community, for whom time is an exceptionally precious commodity, as it is for students, budding entrepreneurs, healthcare providers, and the entire educational sector, opening up new possibilities for innovation and productivity.

Secondly, a hallmark feature is its virtually unlimited printing potential. Unlike conventional FDM printers restricted by a fixed, finite build plate, the iFactory One is ingeniously equipped with a specialized conveyor belt system. This innovative design allows it to print objects of essentially any desired length, enabling truly continuous manufacturing. Furthermore, it excels at producing a series of identical or varied products in sequence, much like sophisticated industrial machines. Crucially, it achieves this remarkable capability at a fraction of the cost; by stark contrast with traditional manufacturing equipment that often demands investments of thousands or even tens of thousands of dollars, the iFactory One is designed to be well within a $1,000 budget, democratizing industrial-scale productivity.
