Together, this eclectic mix of technical prowess, market insight, creative flair, and strategic thinking perfectly covers all the essential aspects our rapidly growing business desperately needed. Taavi, in particular, was the driving force, most intrigued by the transformative potential of additive manufacturing and how it could be leveraged to truly demonstrate the tangible benefits of this cutting-edge technology to a wider audience.
The Cloud Factory team
3DN: How did the Cloud Factory adventure begin?
The genesis of Cloud Factory traces back to a serendipitous encounter. Taavi, quite by chance, met a global superstar who had sought refuge and a quiet retreat in the tranquil forests of Estonia, far from the relentless glare of paparazzi. Inspired by this meeting, Taavi was incredibly excited by the prospect of creating unique metal jewelry items for him. Collaborating with Marek, they successfully secured a government innovation grant, which enabled them to embark on a focused research and development effort. This led to the creation of exceptionally fast and high-quality parameters specifically tailored for the university’s industrial 3D printer, laying the technical foundation for their vision.
Following this technical breakthrough, Taavi invited me, Kati, to join the nascent team, entrusting me with the crucial tasks of branding, marketing, and design. I immediately recognized a far greater potential for this business than simply catering to the superstar. Leveraging my extensive contacts from my years in the entertainment industry, particularly from my time at the nightclub, we began crafting samples for various artists performing there, as well as for other musicians and creatives visiting Estonia. The reaction was consistently astounding. We witnessed genuine amazement in the artists’ eyes as we presented them with custom necklaces and rings featuring their unique logos and personalized design elements. This innovative business model instantly won them over. Observing this enthusiastic reception, we made a pivotal strategic decision: to transition from operating a traditional product store with our own sales channels to becoming a “white label” manufacturing service. This model allowed us to serve a broader spectrum of clients – including numerous artists, influential personalities, and established jewelry brands – providing them with bespoke, on-demand production without the overhead of their own manufacturing. This shift allowed Cloud Factory to scale rapidly and become an indispensable partner in the creative industry.
3DN: How do you make the 3D printed jewelry?
Our commitment to quality and sustainability is paramount, which is why we currently focus exclusively on working with 925 sterling silver, a highly prized and durable precious metal. We’ve established a robust partnership with a supplier who specializes in ethically sourcing scrap silver from various locations worldwide. This scrap silver is then meticulously refined into an ultra-fine silver powder, which serves as the essential raw material for our direct metal 3D printing process. Through the advanced technology of selective laser melting (SLM), we are able to directly 3D print intricate jewelry items from this 100% recycled silver. This method is not only innovative but also deeply aligned with our environmental principles.
Many inquiries often center around our choice of this particular printing technology. The rationale behind our decision is remarkably straightforward and rooted in efficiency: selective laser melting is demonstrably the most resource-efficient method available for metal jewelry production. Unlike traditional manufacturing techniques, which often necessitate numerous complicated and labor-intensive steps such as casting, molding, and extensive finishing, SLM largely bypasses these. This significantly streamlines our entire manufacturing workflow, enabling us to automate a vast majority of our production processes. The ultimate benefits are multifaceted: it allows us to drastically save time, minimize material waste, optimize human resources, and, most importantly, significantly reduce our environmental footprint. This technology perfectly encapsulates our ambitious grand vision: to establish a global network of fully automated and supremely sustainable jewelry printing centers. These centers will offer a unique, incredibly fast, and truly carbon-free service, catering to the evolving needs of brands, independent creators, and individual customers worldwide.

3DN: What advantages and limitations do you find in metal 3D printing?
The advantages offered by metal 3D printing, especially through our chosen selective laser melting process, are substantial and far-reaching, extending well beyond the sustainability benefits previously mentioned. This technology empowers us to provide super-fast and incredibly flexible production capabilities. This means that customized orders, limited edition runs, or entirely new product launches can transition from concept to tangible reality in a matter of days, rather than weeks or months as is typical with traditional methods. Such agility is a game-changer for brands needing to respond swiftly to market trends or create highly personalized offerings. Furthermore, 3D printing facilitates an unprecedented degree of customization, allowing for intricate geometries and unique designs that would be prohibitively expensive or simply impossible to achieve using conventional jewelry-making techniques. Critically, it also helps us to fully automate what has historically been a highly labor-intensive industry, leading to greater efficiency and consistency.
However, like any cutting-edge technology, metal 3D printing does present certain limitations, primarily residing within the product development phase, particularly when it involves creating highly complex 3D models from initial concepts. For designs that are exceptionally detailed or incorporate novel structures, the process of finalizing the 3D models before the sampling process can take a couple of days of dedicated effort. This is largely due to the current need for a significant amount of manual work when converting initial 2D sketches or ideas into ready-to-print 3D digital files. Recognizing this bottleneck, we are actively investing in research and development to address this very challenge. Our ongoing efforts are focused on automating the more manual parts of product development, specifically the conversion of 2D designs into accurate and printable 3D models. Successfully streamlining this aspect will be transformative, enabling us to onboard new customers and bring their unique visions to life faster than ever before, further enhancing our service speed and scalability.
3DN: How do you see the future of additive manufacturing in the jewelry industry?
