Every year, as we meticulously analyze the evolving landscape of the additive manufacturing (AM) market, a consistent trend emerges: an increasing number of companies are embracing AM technologies. This rapid growth signifies a profound shift in industrial production, promising unparalleled innovation and efficiency. However, despite this undeniable momentum, a persistent and critical obstacle continues to hinder even more widespread adoption: a significant lack of specialized education and comprehensive training. Across diverse industries, when executives and professionals are queried about their hesitation to integrate 3D printing into their operations, the most frequently cited reason is a fundamental deficit in knowledge and understanding. This critical skills gap prevents businesses from fully realizing the transformative potential of AM. Addressing this industry-wide challenge, Amadde has emerged with a clear mission: to rectify this educational shortfall. Through its innovative suite of online learning platforms and resources, Amadde is dedicated to democratizing access to additive manufacturing knowledge, catering to a broad spectrum of learners—from those seeking foundational principles to professionals aiming for expertise in advanced AM topics. We recently had the privilege of sitting down with Benjamin Haller, the visionary founder of Amadde, to delve deeper into the genesis of his company, the operational mechanics of its platforms, and the profound importance of making AM education universally accessible and practical for industrial application.
Meet Amadde: Pioneering Accessible Additive Manufacturing Education
3DN: Benjamin, could you please introduce yourself and provide an overview of Amadde?
I’m Benjamin Haller, originally from Germany, and I’ve dedicated approximately six years of my career to the dynamic additive manufacturing industry. My primary focus throughout this journey has always been on facilitating and accelerating the adoption of AM technologies within various companies. I began my career in Germany, working within the consulting department of a prominent machine manufacturer. In this role, I had the opportunity to work directly with businesses, helping them to identify and integrate suitable applications for additive manufacturing, essentially translating complex AM capabilities into tangible business solutions. Following this, I relocated to Sweden, where I joined a research institute that collaborated with eleven major industrial companies. This experience provided me with a deeper understanding from the user’s perspective, observing the practical challenges and opportunities of AM implementation in large-scale industrial settings. Most recently, I leveraged these cumulative experiences and insights to found Amadde. Amadde operates squarely within the research and education space of additive manufacturing, aiming to provide a robust and scalable solution to the industry’s educational needs.

The Genesis of Amadde: Addressing a Critical Industry Need
3DN: What inspired the idea for Amadde, and what specific needs are you addressing in the market?
During my extensive experience working hands-on with numerous small to medium-sized industrial companies, I encountered a significant limitation in traditional consulting models. While I was able to personally educate approximately 1,500 individuals and collaborate directly with 50 to 100 companies, I quickly realized that this approach, while effective, simply couldn’t achieve the expansive scale I envisioned for truly transforming the industry. A key observation was also that the fundamental educational topics and challenges in additive manufacturing remained remarkably consistent over the years. This consistent demand for basic and intermediate AM knowledge, coupled with the inherent scalability issues of one-on-one consulting, ignited my desire to create a solution that could reach an exponentially larger audience without compromising quality. My core objective became to develop a scalable platform capable of disseminating essential AM knowledge to as many people as possible, breaking free from geographical and temporal constraints.

Furthermore, I identified another crucial gap in the existing additive manufacturing educational landscape. While there’s a wealth of valuable information available, much of it often lacks objectivity. Educational content is frequently tethered to specific technologies, machine manufacturers, or proprietary company interests, leading to fragmented and sometimes biased perspectives. This fragmented approach makes it challenging for learners to gain a holistic and unbiased understanding of the AM ecosystem. Therefore, my ambition with Amadde was not only to create a scalable educational platform but also to consolidate and curate the highest quality, most objective, and leading content from across the AM market into a single, cohesive resource. This ensures that users receive well-rounded, impartial knowledge, empowering them to make informed decisions about AM adoption and implementation, regardless of their specific industry or application needs. Amadde aims to be the trusted, impartial source for additive manufacturing education, bridging the gap between available information and actionable knowledge.
The Indispensable Role of Education in Advancing Additive Manufacturing
3DN: Could you elaborate on the critical importance of education within the additive manufacturing sector?
In recent years, a prevalent trend I’ve observed is that while many companies exhibit tremendous eagerness to integrate and leverage additive manufacturing, they frequently grapple with a fundamental hurdle: understanding *how* to effectively utilize it. This isn’t merely about technical operational knowledge; it extends to strategic decision-making, application identification, and process optimization. The paradigm for AM education has also evolved significantly. Initially, the focus was predominantly on educating designers and managers, as they were perceived as the primary drivers of adoption. However, we’ve witnessed a profound shift; the necessity for AM education has now broadened to encompass a much wider array of professionals across an organization, including sales teams, purchasing departments, and even general employees who interact with manufactured parts or supply chains. This democratization of knowledge is absolutely crucial for any company aiming to truly harness the full potential of additive manufacturing.
Consider leading companies in various sectors; even within these innovative organizations, only a relatively small fraction of their employee base possesses a solid understanding of additive manufacturing principles and applications. This limited internal expertise represents a significant missed opportunity. Companies are inadvertently foregoing innovative solutions, competitive advantages, and cost efficiencies simply because their workforce lacks sufficient knowledge about AM’s capabilities and limitations. Without a broad understanding, employees at all levels may fail to identify potential AM applications in their daily tasks, propose innovative designs, or effectively procure AM services and materials. By investing in comprehensive, organization-wide AM education, companies can cultivate an internal ecosystem where opportunities for additive manufacturing are recognized, explored, and implemented from every angle, thereby unlocking unprecedented levels of innovation, efficiency, and market competitiveness. Education is not just a benefit; it’s a strategic imperative for AM success.
Amadde’s Structured Approach: The Three Pillars of Learning
3DN: Can you expand on the three distinct focuses found on the Amadde platform and how they cater to different learning needs?
Certainly. Our platform is meticulously structured around three distinct yet interconnected pillars, designed to provide a progressive and comprehensive learning journey for all professionals interested in additive manufacturing. These pillars cater to different levels of expertise and specific educational requirements, ensuring a tailored experience for every user and organization.
**1. Comprehensive Online Courses:** Starting with our foundational online courses, we currently offer four robust modules, each meticulously crafted to cover essential aspects of additive manufacturing. These modules include: one dedicated to the **Fundamentals of AM**, providing a solid grounding in the core concepts and principles; another focused on **Part Identification**, crucial for understanding when and how AM can be optimally applied to specific components; a module on **Metal Technologies**, delving into the intricacies of metal 3D printing processes, materials, and applications; and finally, a module on **Polymer Technologies**, exploring the vast array of polymer-based AM techniques and their respective uses. Each of these modules is rich with a variety of learning materials, including engaging video lectures, interactive content designed for practical application, and supplementary reading materials for deeper dives. Depending on an individual’s learning pace, each module typically requires 1-2 hours to complete, incorporating a series of quizzes to reinforce learning and assess comprehension. Upon successful completion, every participant receives a certification, validating their acquired knowledge.
These online learning programs are particularly invaluable for companies, as they are specifically targeted at developing internal AM experts. Companies can assign an “admin” or “super user” who gains full access to the platform. This admin can then strategically form sub-groups within their organization, inviting different employees to specific learning paths. For instance, a group for designers might be assigned all available courses to maximize their understanding of AM design principles, while a group for managers might focus primarily on the Fundamentals and Part Identification modules to grasp strategic implications. This administrative functionality also allows companies to seamlessly monitor the progress of their employees, track their learning journey, and communicate effectively with all participants. The ultimate goal of these structured online learnings is to empower employees to confidently and accurately identify the most suitable applications for additive manufacturing within their company, laying the groundwork for successful AM integration and innovation.

**2. The Knowledge Hub: Advanced Live Courses:** The second critical pillar is our Knowledge Hub, designed to facilitate more advanced learning and practical application. Through the Knowledge Hub, we forge strategic partnerships with leading institutions and experts within the additive manufacturing market. These collaborations enable us to curate and offer a diverse range of more advanced, live courses. These courses build upon the foundational knowledge gained from our online modules, exploring similar topics in greater depth or introducing new, specialized areas such as real-world AM production strategies, advanced design optimization techniques for AM, or specific material science applications. Once an engineer or a team has progressed through our online courses and successfully identified a potential application for AM, they can then collaboratively, or individually, navigate the Knowledge Hub to book and participate in these specialized live courses. This structured progression ensures that learners can deepen their expertise and gain practical insights directly from industry leaders, moving from theoretical understanding to hands-on, advanced application knowledge.
**3. Direct Expert Consultation Slots:** The third and most personalized level of support offered through our platform involves direct expert consultation. Every company and individual holding an active subscription to Amadde can readily book a dedicated 30-minute consulting slot with a leading AM expert. This invaluable resource is designed for highly specific inquiries and challenges. For example, if a user has completed the Part Identification course and wishes to discuss the feasibility of a particular application within their context, they can leverage this consultation. Similarly, after completing the Metal Technologies course, if a team needs to deliberate on whether a specific part would be best produced using metal AM technology A versus technology B, or to delve into nuanced aspects of process parameters, material selection, or post-processing, these consulting slots provide a direct channel to expert insights. This personalized guidance ensures that learners can translate theoretical knowledge into practical, actionable strategies, overcoming specific hurdles and optimizing their AM implementation journey. It is this three-tiered approach—online courses for foundational and intermediate knowledge, a Knowledge Hub for advanced live learning, and direct expert consultations for specific challenges—that allows Amadde to offer a truly holistic and adaptive educational ecosystem for additive manufacturing.
