We envisioned a space for pieces that could genuinely inspire emotion, tell a story, and transform environments, yet remain attainable to a wider audience. This profound realization blossomed into the concept of Ukma—a pioneering project dedicated to democratizing access to exquisite, high-quality design through relentless technological innovation and a commitment to ethical production.
Today, Ukma functions as a dynamic laboratory where boundless creativity, sophisticated engineering, and state-of-the-art additive manufacturing converge. This fusion allows us to meticulously shape objects that extend far beyond their purely functional roles. These are not just products; they are pieces that feel intrinsically alive, each imbued with a distinct personality and narrative. They embody a revolutionary way of understanding design, challenging conventions and inviting interaction. Our creations reflect a deep respect for materials and a passionate dedication to craftsmanship, all while leveraging the efficiencies and possibilities that modern technology offers. Ukma represents a new paradigm in design, where every piece is a testament to innovation, sustainability, and the profound connection between people and the objects that inhabit their spaces.
3DN: At what point did Ukma decide to incorporate additive manufacturing into its process?
The integration of additive manufacturing into Ukma’s workflow was a natural and inevitable evolution, rather than an abrupt decision. We were already deeply immersed in experimenting with a diverse range of sustainable materials and actively exploring alternative production methods that minimized environmental impact. In this context, additive manufacturing, particularly large-format 3D printing, emerged as the most logical and compelling next step for our studio. The pivotal moment came when we fully grasped the scope of creative freedom that large-format 3D printing offered. This technology allowed us to design without the constraints of traditional molds, significantly reduce material waste by building objects layer by layer, and crucially, facilitate local production, thereby minimizing our carbon footprint and supporting regional economies. It became clear that this methodology aligned perfectly with Ukma’s foundational philosophy of innovation, sustainability, and accessible high-quality design. From that realization onward, additive manufacturing transitioned from being an experimental technique to becoming the central pillar of our production model. This powerful integration enables us to infuse every piece we create with a unique blend of technological precision, artisanal craft, and profound emotional resonance, ensuring that our designs are not only aesthetically pleasing but also carry a deeper narrative and connection.

3DN: What are functional Ukmas, and what materials are they made from?
Functional Ukmas represent the exciting next evolution of our collectible pieces—they are objects designed not just for admiration but for active interaction and integration into daily life. While maintaining their distinct formal identity and emotional depth, these pieces are specifically crafted to be lived with, used, and to dynamically transform any space they inhabit. Each Functional Ukma is meticulously produced using large-format 3D printing, a process that allows for incredible precision and customization. Our material palette is deliberately chosen to embody our commitment to sustainability and performance. We primarily utilize high-performance recycled polymers, which offer exceptional durability and aesthetic versatility. In many cases, we also incorporate innovative biomaterials derived from organic waste streams, such as olive pits or coffee husks. These advanced materials enable us to create remarkably durable pieces that are perfectly suited for both indoor and outdoor environments, capable of withstanding various conditions while significantly reducing our overall environmental impact. We often articulate that our creations are not merely furniture, but rather “living forms of design.” This philosophy underscores that their purpose extends beyond simple utility; instead of merely fulfilling a function, they are conceived to generate a rich, immersive experience. They invite engagement, provoke thought, and contribute to the atmosphere of a space, making them integral elements of a lived environment.
3DN: Could you walk us through the design and manufacturing process behind functional Ukmas?
The journey of each functional Ukma begins with an initial spark—an idea, an emotion, or a narrative that we are passionate about bringing to life. Our creative process is highly collaborative and iterative. From this conceptual genesis, the design team meticulously develops a series of sketches and detailed drawings. This initial phase is crucial for exploring various shapes, proportions, and the overall experiential quality we aim to evoke in the final piece. Once a clear creative direction is established, the design transitions into its advanced digital phase. Here, it is expertly modeled in 3D using sophisticated software, allowing for precise refinement. During this stage, we rigorously analyze and optimize every aspect for ergonomics, ensuring comfort and usability; stability, guaranteeing structural integrity; and the specific structural behavior of the chosen material, which dictates how the piece will perform and endure over time. This detailed digital modeling enables us to catch and correct potential issues long before physical production begins, saving time and resources.
Concurrently, we conduct extensive testing on various aesthetic elements, including color palettes, surface textures, and finish options. This parallel process ensures that each piece ultimately reflects a cohesive and harmonious relationship between its form, the selected material, and its intended function. This iterative approach, blending artistic vision with engineering rigor, empowers us to experiment freely and fine-tune every minute detail before committing to final production. Once the design receives its comprehensive approval, we initiate the manufacturing process using our advanced large-format 3D printing technology. We carefully select between high-performance recycled polymers or our specialized biomaterials, depending on the piece’s specific requirements and aesthetic goals. In this way, every functional Ukma comes to life through a deeply integrated process where cutting-edge technology, innovative design principles, and continuous experimentation intersect to create something truly unique, meaningful, and sustainable.
