3DN: Could you please introduce yourself and provide an overview of Atome3D?

Benoit Michaut, Founder of Atome3D

Benoit Michaut

“Certainly. I’m Benoit Michaut, the President of Atome3D. My professional background is in electro-technics, but my journey into the world of 3D printing began with a personal curiosity. I acquired my first 3D printer, a Dagoma Discovery, and quickly became fascinated by the technology. This hands-on experience ignited a strong desire to delve deeper, and it was during this exploration that I truly grasped the immense, untapped potential of additive manufacturing, particularly within the industrial sector. However, when I was in the process of choosing that initial printer, I encountered a significant challenge: the market was overwhelmingly complex. It was incredibly difficult for an newcomer to discern the subtle differences between machines, understand their capabilities, and determine which options offered genuine value. This complexity led me to a critical realization: users desperately needed comprehensive support and expert guidance in selecting the right technology, the most suitable machine, and the appropriate materials for their specific needs. It was this realization that served as the catalyst for establishing Atome3D in 2016 – my mission was to simplify the intricate world of 3D printing and make it accessible to everyone.”

“Since its inception, Atome3D has experienced remarkable growth. Starting from a modest 25 square meter space, we have expanded significantly to occupy a sprawling 500 square meter facility. Today, we stand as one of the preeminent distributors of 3D printing solutions in France, distinguished by our unwavering commitment to customer satisfaction. Beyond retail distribution, we also operate as a robust wholesaler, supplying a vast selection of equipment, consumables, and essential spare parts – from various filaments to intricate components – to a network of resellers. Our key differentiator and a cornerstone of our success is our exceptional responsiveness. We maintain an extensive inventory, which empowers us to fulfill orders with unparalleled speed, ensuring delivery within 24 hours to virtually any location across Europe. We firmly believe there’s a substantial and growing market in European countries waiting to be fully engaged and supported, and Atome3D is strategically positioned to lead this expansion.”

3DN: Who constitutes your primary customer base, and what are their fundamental needs?

“Our customer portfolio is incredibly diverse, encompassing a wide spectrum of industries and business sizes. We proudly serve major manufacturers and industrial giants such as Air France, Thales, and Bosch, alongside a significant number of very small enterprises (VSEs) and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). These industrial clients are predominantly seeking robust solutions for producing functional parts, jigs, fixtures, and specialized tooling. Their objectives often include rapid prototyping, creation of custom manufacturing aids, and the production of end-use components with specific mechanical properties. Furthermore, a substantial segment of our clientele includes professionals in highly specialized fields like jewelry making, watchmaking, and the dental sector. These professionals typically gravitate towards resin 3D printing solutions due to their exceptional precision, fine detail capabilities, and smooth surface finishes, which are critical for intricate models, molds, and dental prosthetics. Recognizing that the successful adoption of 3D printing extends beyond merely acquiring a machine, Atome3D is also a Data Dock certified training organization. This certification allows us to provide essential training and comprehensive support, ensuring our customers are fully proficient in operating their machines and optimizing their workflows. Indeed, empowering users through education was one of the very first strategic development areas for Atome3D, as we understood that knowledge transfer is absolutely crucial for maximizing the benefits of additive manufacturing.”

3DN: How can additive manufacturing empower manufacturers to significantly enhance their competitiveness?

“From my perspective, desktop 3D printing is experiencing a profound transformation, moving beyond its initial novelty phase. Today, consumers and industrial clients alike are far more informed and sophisticated; they possess a clearer understanding of the tangible benefits and practical applications they can expect from this technology. They are no longer just experimenting; instead, they are embarking on concrete, impactful projects aimed at manufacturing functional parts and specialized tooling, a stark contrast to the exploratory use cases of a few years ago. There is a strong, growing demand to push the boundaries of what’s achievable with 3D printing. I firmly believe that the industry’s paramount challenge and opportunity lies in delivering truly tailor-made solutions. Manufacturers need to evolve beyond one-size-fits-all offerings and instead provide machines that are intrinsically adaptable to specific operational requirements, materials precisely engineered to meet exacting performance criteria, and design services that facilitate personalized product development. This level of customization is where additive manufacturing truly shines.”

“For companies to unlock the full potential of additive manufacturing, it must become an integral part of their organizational DNA, deeply embedded within their operational strategies. I am convinced that an increasing number of companies will pivot away from relying heavily on external subcontracting for their manufacturing needs. The ability to integrate a 3D printer in-house is becoming remarkably accessible, streamlined, and offers an unprecedented degree of control and flexibility in production. For me, 3D printing isn’t in direct competition with established manufacturing technologies; rather, its inherent flexibility, speed of execution, and capacity for rapid iteration position it as an extraordinarily valuable production method for an expanding base of manufacturers. It’s crucial to understand that 3D printing doesn’t aim to entirely supplant processes like machining or injection molding. Instead, it serves as a powerful, complementary tool. The key is to thoroughly comprehend its unique capabilities and limitations, enabling companies to strategically integrate it at the precise moment where it offers the most significant advantages, whether for rapid prototyping, complex geometries, or on-demand production of specialized parts.”

3DN: What significant trends are you observing in the realm of 3D printing materials?

“PLA, while a foundational material, is no longer sufficient to meet the sophisticated demands of modern manufacturing. Manufacturers are actively seeking more advanced, technical materials that can withstand rigorous industrial applications. Consequently, we are seeing a significant shift towards materials like Polypropylene (PP), Nylon, Polycarbonate (PC), and a rapidly growing interest in composite materials, which are often reinforced with carbon fiber, glass fiber, or Kevlar for enhanced strength and performance. Furthermore, there’s a notable surge in demand for high-performance thermoplastics. For example, many manufacturers are already familiar with materials like PEEK because they regularly machine it. However, the knowledge gap often lies in understanding how to effectively 3D print with such advanced materials. The family of polymers is incredibly vast and complex, and there’s a prevalent lack of comprehensive understanding regarding the full capabilities of various thermoplastics, their specific properties, and how these attributes can be leveraged for additive manufacturing. It’s a common scenario today where many parts are still unnecessarily manufactured using metal, despite the fact that they could be produced more efficiently and cost-effectively with high-performance plastics via 3D printing. Opting for metal in such cases often results in higher production costs, a heavier final part, and a significantly slower manufacturing process. This is precisely where Atome3D steps in: we provide crucial expertise and support to help manufacturers confidently navigate this transition towards sophisticated polymer additive manufacturing, enabling them to optimize their processes and unlock new levels of efficiency and innovation.”

3DN: How do you envision the trajectory and future of additive manufacturing?

“In my strong opinion, the future of manufacturing is intrinsically linked with 3D printing. I foresee a time, not too far off, when virtually all companies, regardless of their size or sector, will be equipped with both a Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) 3D printer and a resin-based 3D printer. These technologies will become as indispensable as traditional workshop tools. We simply won’t be able to operate efficiently without them. The accessibility of 3D printing solutions, coupled with the profound benefits they offer—such as accelerated prototyping, cost-effective customization, on-demand production, and unparalleled design freedom—will transform them from advantageous tools into absolute necessities for maintaining competitiveness and fostering innovation in an increasingly dynamic global market. The era of widespread 3D printing adoption is not merely a possibility; it’s an inevitability that forward-thinking companies are already embracing.”
