It acts as a compass, guiding organizations through the complex journey of identifying optimal applications, selecting the right technologies, and formulating a coherent additive manufacturing strategy that aligns with their overarching business objectives.

The Genesis of a Global Additive Manufacturing Network

The inspiring idea behind creating a comprehensive network for additive manufacturing services emerged approximately three years ago, during a pivotal moment in founder Willem-Jan van Loon’s career. While attending an international exhibition for the parcel post industry in Sweden, Willem-Jan, who already possessed over five years of valuable experience in 3D printing, was invited due to the keen interest from major industry players like DHL and FedEx in understanding how this transformative technology could reorganize their operations and supply chains.

Willem-Jan journeyed to Stockholm, famously bringing two 3D printers in his car, an unconventional move that foreshadowed the innovative problem-solving to come. On the very first day of the exhibition, he encountered a situation that would fundamentally shape his vision for Beamler. An exhibitor, facing a crisis, approached Willem-Jan for urgent assistance. A critical plastic component on their display machine had broken, rendering it inoperable and preventing them from demonstrating its capabilities to potential visitors. The spare part was located in Japan, meaning a replacement would take several days, jeopardizing their entire exhibition presence and potential sales.

In a testament to the power of additive manufacturing, Willem-Jan quickly examined the damaged part and commissioned a designer to create a 3D model. What followed was a remarkable display of efficiency: the part was printed for a mere 12 cents in under 8 minutes. This rapidly produced 3D printed component was then installed on the machine, bringing it back to full functionality. This immediate solution was an immense relief for the exhibitor, who subsequently managed to sell the machine for a substantial €450,000. This incident served as a profound epiphany for Willem-Jan, solidifying his realization that a fundamental change was needed in how businesses access and utilize 3D printing. It was this singular event that truly ignited the idea of Beamler and set the course for its development.
